Timing chain replacement on an N14 engine (video)

The video i made is longer than the others I’ve seen but it’s a lot more detailed and you won’t need to put your car in service mode. Enjoy

2am. I'm 3 minutes in. I don't think I can last another 2:25.

But this looks like an awesome video so far, thank you friend for taking the extra time and effort to do the video! I'm gonna head over to YT and sub.

Mike

Great video. It really makes me think I could do a timing chain replacement myself. I can't. But it's got me thinking about it.

i'm not an overly experienced mechanic. I know just enough to be dangerous. I've done oil changes and minor things. I once replaced the alternator on an MG. I did brake pads and new wheel bearings and rotors on that MG too. The main thing stopping me from doing my own timing chain is I don't have the investment in tools or a good space to work on things. I don't own a torque wrench or jack stands. Stuff like that. If I get stuck and the car is out of commission for a long period of time, i'll never hear the end of it from my wife and daughter (the MINIs are theirs, I just wash and arrange maintenance).

I got the timing tools for $45 on ebay. Torque wrench, about $20. Jack stands, $50. I've done jobs like this in my driveway. If you have basic tools, buying a few extras is not a big deal. Especially when you consider what a shop would charge, or heaven forbid, the dealership. Save yourself a ton of money, get the experience. And remember, just because a shop can do the work, doesn't necessarily mean they're doing it right. The car I bought is a prime example.

The tools are much cheaper than getting the job done by someone else and in the video I’m doing the job in a dirt driveway.
