New engine help

Hi everyone.

finally got around to removing the engine and disassemble from my son's 2007 MCS.
2 pistons are chipped and the cylinder walls are scored deeply.
We purchased this Mini knowing this could happen. It is in great shape. The previous owner took very good care of it until it over heated. It got hot enough to melt the valve cover, so we expected as would need to go this route.
After discussing what the next step should be we decided to find a replacement engine.

My question is where would be the best, most cost effectively place to find a rebuilt or new engine? We would like to be able to drop an engine in but if We can find something that runs and can rebuild ourselves for a good price, we would consider that. We are not in a big hurry but, would like to have it running over the next few months.

We want to make this a project for us to do together, but need to figure out what our budget should be.

Any advice will be helpful
Thank you

Hit your local wrecking yards or eBay (plenty for sale). Or you can try one of the vendors on this forum.

the cheapest would be buying a short block with or without moving parts. then you could swap the good parts and buy the remaining ones.
