Its all about the maintenance records that are available and the condition of the car. If there is any smoke, be wary. If there is no records of carbon cleaning, transmission service, timing chain service, water pump, thermostat, or turbo oil line replacement, then you are probably asking for trouble.
Treat it like a regular car, look for any fluid leaks, listen for odd noises, see if it feels smooth. Honestly, I think that 150k on a MINI is a good life, not sure how much it has left.
The bottom has fallen out of the market, I think that you can find something for $6-8k with 60k miles on it.

I still owe the bank 16k on my 2011 MCS, and at 70k, he may be worth half of that. It's not about the money, it's about the "fun-factor". That being said, save your money, and wait for an N18 with lower mileage to come along. They are out there. And, you need to be able to do your own maintenance and/or repairs, or have a GREAT extended warranty.
