Hatch opening issue

Hey guys

New mini owner here. 2010 cooper s Just got the car this weekend and Im having an issue. I want to see if its supposed to be this way or not. Since there is no internal trunk opening latch the only way to do it is through the FOB correct?

Heres the issue...... If the FOB is inserted into the ignition and the car is UNLOCKED I cannot open the trunk from the outside. So basically if i drop my kid off somewhere and he needs to grab something out of the trunk we have to shut off the car and pop the trunk through the fob, he just cant pop the trunk and get his stuff. Should the trunk be able to be opened if the car is unlocked?

Is it supposed to be that way or do I need to have the dealer address this?

Sorry, I think i confused even myself explaining that, but hopefully you get the point

Welcome to NAM and the world of MINI Motoring. You have lots of miles and grins ahead of you. Please post some pictures when you have the chance.

Pages 18-19 of the owners manual appears to advise you to shut the engine off and remove the key. They say that is to prevent people or animals inside the car from accidentally locking it!

However, you can reprogram the fob to unlock all the doors at once which might be a partial solution.

Drive Hard. Drive Safe. Keep Grinning.

You should be able to unlock all the doors using the central locking toggle switch. That should unlock the trunk too, and enable the latch on the trunk to work.

And the hatch unlock is just above the rear license plate

I think you are probably seeing what some of us have experienced - the external trunk button/release is no longer functioning. Our 2010 just started doing the same thing. We need to use the fob if we want to get into the hatch from outside.

There was a great how-to on here a little while back on troubleshooting and replacing the switch/parts that are back there under the rubber cover that you press on that should open the hatch.

I gotta agree with SuperD, you probably have a defective trunk switch, unless it works with everything unlocked and the key in your pocket. My key is set to lock or unlock everything at once --- both doors, hatch, and gas filler door.

And FYI --- my '07 has an emergency release under the back seat. Don't know about the 2010's. Strictly for emergencies --- not for kids to use.

Welcome to the brand!

Some other things to keep in mind - check your oil, often! And if you need to add it, make sure it has the correct specs. Castrol, for example, has at least 3 types of 5w-30 that do not meet Mini spec.

Keep an eye on your tire pressures. You will notice a difference in handling and tire wear.

Check with a Mini dealer to see if the car had Extended Maintenance - it could still be usable - 6 years/100k from original in service date. Ours just ran out on our 2010 MCS.
