Timing chain inspection

I know this topic has been done to death but is there any way to confirm that the timing chain needs replacement, besides the sound of the "death rattle"?
I've had the car about 4 months and there was no rattle when I got it but I think there might be one now. I'm not sure if I'm actually hearing it or if I'm just too aware of the possibility and now I'm imagining it.

Thanks guys.

Short of visual inspection, checking the timing with the proper lock tools, and the obvious noises, no.

It takes a special tool, usually part of the timing chain locking kit --- a dummy tensioner.

Here's a procedure on how to use it ---
