N14 S or N14 JCW?

Hi everyone;

I'm looking for some serious input from those that have the knowledge as far as the difference between the:

2007 Cooper S R56 N14 Engine -vs- 2007 Cooper JCW R56 N14 Engine

I happen to have a dead engine because and I'm in the process of finding a rebuilt one for my 2007 Cooper S (manual) and I found a place that has bothe engines mentioned above.

N14 for Cooper S $2750
N14 for JCW $2950

as you can see for extra $200 I'm willing to get the JCW engine since I already have the turbo for it but the question is:

Can I drop a JCW Engine N14 in a Cooper that has a original N14 "S"?

I'm meaning all this mechanically

Hi odieman:

The engine can be 'physically' interchanged between the S and JCW....

But.... the JCW has the following differences that may affect your decision:

• The side faces of the pistons have been strengthened and adapted to the reduced
compression ratio of 10.0.
• The charge air pipe has been improved to reduce the pressure drop.
• The air intake filter has an integrated air mass sensor.
• The turbocharger has been adapted to the changed conditions and improved.
The materials for the turbocharger and exhaust manifold have been adapted to
the changed conditions because the maximum exhaust gas temperature is about
30°C higher.
• The catalytic converter has become a two stage design and has been improved.
• The appearance and acoustics, plus the specific sound impedance of the exhaust
system have been improved. This improvement also creates a special sound.[/FONT]

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input

So would you agree with a buddy of mine that states that the "S" can be more upgradable than the JCW? He was telling me that the JCW is very limited when it comes to add performance.

If I understand the question I'd guess that is relative to your baseline. Since the JCW is already somewhat upgraded, especially if you have the exhaust system, then there is less to do. The JCW car itself has other upgrades over the S, such as brakes, etc.

My first reaction would be to go for the JCW engine. However, I would check into potential problems running the lower compression JCW engine (as Mini Mania pointed out) with an S ECU....would that cause problems? That's over my head....might not be a problem at all. It seems that all of the other JCW over S factory upgrades would not impact choosing the JCW engine/long block....and would offer you future upgrade opportunities....$200 doesn't seem like much additional.

Also, not sure if you know the history of the two engines, but another consideration is that the JCW would potentially have a history of being driven more aggressively (that's why we spend the extra $$).....but if owned by an enthusiast, which is perhaps more likely with the JCW than the S, then perhaps it was maintained more regularly....esp oil changes. All of this is highly speculative!!!!

Not sure if you're set on what years you want to go with, but just keep in mind that with the R56, the factory JCW didn't come out until 2009. Anything earlier advertised as a JCW will have a tuning kit that modifies some S components (intake, exhaust, ecu).
