R56 Recommended setup for suspension
Recommended setup for suspension
hi, need some advice on what to get.
Looking to get coilers for some tracking events and spirited driving for a R56 JCW.
PSS?
KW V1? V2? or V3?
any experience would be greatly appreciated.
I don't need the best, but something above average.
has to be a daily and comfortable as well since will be transporting 2 year old!

I was recommended the Bilstein PSS10's by a good mechanic of mine. I'd be interested in what others recommend for track events/daily driving also.

Check out our TSW spec V2 KWs, these are the KWs with TSW specd linear spring setup with adj rebound. This setup was designed just for what you want to do still drive well everyday, but really perform and be predictable at the track.

You are also going to want an Hsport comp rear sway bar as that will give you the most handling gain.

If you want the best bang for your buck coil over for the occasional track day and for spirited daily driving, I'd recommend ST coil overs. They're manufactured by KW. That being said, the KW coils are made of stainless steel or aluminum, whereas ST uses galvanized steel for the coilover housings. The ST coilovers do come with either fixed damping or rebound adjustment whereas KW has a much more wide range of adjustments. I know this is a Ford, but Speed Hunters wrote a great article with the comparison of the ST vs. KW coils here. So you get some insight on them and their comparison. I've had ST coils installed on some very big HP builds at the old shop I worked at. They worked and performed very well when compared to their more expensive coil over counterpoints. Now, if you can spend the money on KW coil overs over ST, then definitely go for it. I'm looking into their V3's, but I do a lot of track racing. Do note, that when you upgrade you will be sacrificing some ride comfort. When you lower your MINI, look into some rear adjustable control arms as well. Hotchkis arms here are a great choice. Good luck and if you have any questions let me know!

What kind of budget are you looking at for the coilovers. I just went through this for my R53 GP. Remember that you will also want to plan budget for Adj Front Camber Plates, Adj Rear Comp Sway Bar, Adj Rear Camber Links (at least 2 if not all 4), Rear Top Shock Mounts (to replace OEM soft rubber, I used Powerflex instead of OEM), and various bolts that might need replacing.
- The KW TSW V2 at $2000 were high on my list but I decided against them because they have the adjusters on the top. With top adjusters in the rear, you need to remove the strut to adjust the rear or drill access holes in the body and create a tool to reach the shock.
- The PSS10s are good at $2200 with bottom adjusters but have progressive springs and I wanted linear springs. Also the PSS10s have a minimum of 1" drop so it might require spacers.
- The PSS10s with a linear springs option are $2600 at Vorshlag.
- I selected the AST 5100 at $2600. They have bottom adjusters and linear springs (I selected 6 Kg/7 Kg F/R rates that are a little softer than standard 7 Kg/8 Kg rates, at no extra cost). Plus the AST 5100s have great reviews. I ordered from Erik at theraceline.com
I just received the AST 5100s but have not received all the other suspension parts so I have not installed them yet.
