Replacement Key

I purchased a replacement key off of Ebay which is stating the key is a "blank" key. It has been reprogrammed. In the instructions I need to find a locksmith that know how to reprogram these keys. Every locksmith I talk to has no idea what I am talking about. My question to the forum is what type of locksmith do I need to look for that can reprogram these keys. I assume the key has an RFID chip of some kind. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Every thread I've read on this subject states you have to buy the fob at a dealer and have them program it.

Hi, I get this question a couple times a week. New keys need to be purchased through a Dealer. The orders are sent to BMW in New Jersey and the key is cut and coded per the vin number of the vehicle. The key is then shipped to the Dealership. From what I understand the ebay keys can not be programmed easily if at all. I hope this helps.

Sorry you are learning about this the hard way. Your nearest Dealer more than likely is Baron MINI right off I-35 at exit 228B. If you are in the south or west part of the state then maybe Jackie Cooper MINI down in Edmond would be closer. You can scan and email or fax your DL and registration. They'll send you a credit card authorization form then they'll let you know when you can pick it up.

I think Dealerships sell them for right around $280.00, we have them listed at $146.06 for a complete fob.

Sorry, OP, you probably wasted your money on eBay purchase.

So you are saying that you can do replacement keys for $146.06? What part number on your site do I order? What info do you need to cut and program the key? I would like to order a 2nd key/fob for my R56.

Lesson learned.....

MiniPartsStore

Thank you for the help. Since I bought this on Stealbay I have started the dispute process with paypal. After numerous calls to locksmith's the guru and all "knowing" locksmith in town stated the same thing you posted. I chalk this up to a life lesson. Where do I go on your website to order the replacement key.

Perfect, here are a couple of links.
Mini Key Fob 66123456368 http://thebmwminipartstore.com/parts...&siteid=218365
Slide in spare key 51212756061 http://thebmwminipartstore.com/parts...&siteid=218365

Along with the order Mini will need proof of ownerships. Most people email a picutre of their current registration and a copy of the owners drivers license. Our email is thebmwminipartstore@gmail.com

Thanks!

comfort access key fobs are typically $100 more and require programming at the dealer in order for this feature to work.

I emailed these guys and PM'ed them on this forum and never got a response :-(

I only have one key for my MINI, and hate the thought of getting raked over the coals by the dealer.

I bought one from them about a month ago. I just ordered through their website and emailed them a picture of my registration and DL. Had the new key in about a week. Awesome...

Thanks for that info.

So they're still in business, just have cr@ppy customer service. I'll take a chance and just dispute the charge if they don't send me a key.

Minipartsstore

I just rebuilt a 2013 Salavage Mini Cooper and purchased 95% of my parts through these folks. Besides thier prices being just about the best on the market.....the team has been ausome. Never did have to call on anything. Went to the website put in which Mini I have, VIN number and part number. Paid by paypal and have the part within 3 or 4 days for most items. Some parts had to come from Germany and that was less than 2 weeks. My Key fob order went smoothly. I had a couple of extra hoops to jump through because of the rebuilt title. However that was not thier fault. So I pretty much order all my parts through this company.

That's awesome to hear. So you were able to get a replacement key fob without comfort access for around $150 from them?

Not a problem and I'm with ggrim01. Those folks prices are some of the lowest I've seen and their service and communication has been outstanding.

It was around that price w/o comfort access. I have comfort access so mine was more. If you click on the links in the previous post you can get a exact cost. There are 2 items to order. The key fob and passive key. Once you order check the email updates so you can send the info requested from minipartstore. However make sure you change the make model to match your year, make model.

He's talking about the machined key that slides into the fob - this is the link, but be sure to have it match your model/year (think they're the same, but just in case) About $28 + shipping + tax
