They actually switched mid 2012 and some '12 JCW models do infact have the N18

On a side note, I've noticed the pops only happen after having driven the car for a certain distance. For example, if I only make a 2-3 mile commute in sport mode, no pops....if I stretch that to a few miles more, pops/gurgles all over the place.
That makes sense so it does change the map.

Agree about the distance but i suspect it's actually temp that triggers it, I need 5 or 6 miles on the clock before anything happens.

Fuel won't detonate unless the header/manifold/downpipe is hot.

Correct, once my temp gauge hits 90c, pops start.

Sent from cellular device.

I'm really enjoying reading all the comments about the MCS quirkiness!

It is pure driving pleasure, too.

My 2010 N14 jcw pops and bangs a lot, and as said only does it when its up to temperature, as there is no gauge fitted I use that as a sign the car is now ok to use properly, I was under the impression N18 engines only pop in sport mode which seems a bit of a backwards step, but not as much as the years they stoped doing it at all.

So what makes the JCWs pop over the MCS with the same engine? Is it a different downpipe or is it the different cat back section of the exhaust? Or is it simply the engine mapping is different?

Don't think the downpipe is different on the jcw to the cooper s, so its possibly exhaust (especially the rear silencer) I would think as I gather mapping is the same?

I doubt mapping is the same with a different turbo and exhaust and much more I'm sure it's programmed into the computer

I think mapping is a little different because there is an ECU remap needed when you get the factory tuning kit.

Probably right concerning the jcw mapping as there is a different Turbo,, I know the jcw rear silencer makes a big difference to the sound when fitted to Cooper s models though.
