Our mini has started throwing code P054B and going into a no boost mode. Usually clears after shutting the car off and restarting. But then it comes back.
Any ideas? DIY fix?
I found this on another mini site:
P054B - VANOS, exhaust-side, cold start: No closed-loop control possible

Not exactly sure of a cause or cure for the code, but I'd start with checking the fuse and relay box in the engine bay. Should be on the driver side next to the ECU.
I had a loose relay last week that was causing the car to die everytime I put it in gear. It was throwing codes for MAF, vanos, valvetronic, O2 sensors.
May just be that simple. Is it idling fine or making any odd noises? The Vanos units are in the cam timing sprockets located on the passenger side of the motor. If it is a Vanos issue this is where any noise would be coming from.

The screens on the VANOS can get restricted over time. You can clean or replace the solenoid quite easily if needed. From the image below the red arrow shows a partially restricted solenoid and the green arrow shows a fully restricted solenoid. My suggestion is if you have determined you need a VANOS solenoid by cleaning then replace it. HERE if needed.
