R56 Warped rear bumper--anyone else have this?
Warped rear bumper--anyone else have this?
Looking down on the bumper in the rear, it's pretty obvious.
I can push the bumper in and even it out, but it bounces right back to its warped shape when I let go...

2010 MCS.

I just got the car last week, so I don't know about its prior history. I don't see any scuffs. I was thinking the exhaust heat might have caused it to warp.
That's interesting--thanks for the tip!
Yea there is a bracket under there Right by number 10 and 11 in the diagram. Might be bent.

Thanks

Thanks

I doubt exhaust heat would warp the rear bumper, only on one side, about 6 inches away from the muffler.
Unless your car was stationary, running at 5000rpm, in death valley
Its most definite that your car got a little kiss in the rear.
The plastic wouldn't show any scuffs or marks, but the metal frame underneath would be bent.
And since the MCS plastics are somewhat thin in the rear valance area, it can be fixed by pulling the metal frame/bracket back in place.

So if anyone else has this problem, here's what I did...
There is a fairly flimsy metal L-bracket behind the bumper on the passenger side only. That apparently had been lightly hit and bent inward (as ECSTuning suspected). It's very easy to see with the rear of the car backed up onto ramps. It is also easily bent rearward by hand, which I did. That pushed the bumper rearward on the passenger side which helped somewhat.
The problem then was that the driver's side of the bumper was still further rearward than the passenger side. To pull that side of the bumper inward, I clipped a metal clothes hanger to the appropriate length and hooked one end around the muffler 'hanger' and the other end hooked into the inside of the bumper.
Very easy fix and now the bumper looks perfect.

I'm not sure I would do that...depending on your insurance company and such, that could make your rates go up. Plus the actual repairs may be cheaper than your deductible.
The bumper is very thin plastic in that area. The car was probably lightly kissed by another car at one point, which bent the thin metal bracket behind the bumper. It was left that way for a while which resulted in the bumper wanting to stay in that warped shape. The fix was very easy.
