That I'm not sure of. I called MINI USA and they told me that the HPFP would be covered if that's the issue.

I scheduled an appointment for Thursday at the dealership.

I got a call back from the dealer and they said the HPFP is indeed failing and they are going to get that replaced for no charge!

That's great news!

I'm on the fence about whether my HPFP will even show signs of failure at this point in time, I'm definitely running lean and can hear humming and or harmonic noises coming from the HPFP. I'm just afraid that after I pay a diagnostic fee of $150 that whey will say that my HPFP is fine, it's only $50 more ($150+50 = $200) to buy the pump and install it myself. However I will need to buy the special tool to remove the ($117) quick disconnect tool.

Has anyone ever heard of a HPFP seizing up locking the camshaft up destroying the engine like the vacuum pump has been known to do?

If your car doesn't have a fault whatsoever, they won't charge you. At least it's been that way for me every time I've gone to the dealer. They'll cover the HPFP up to 120,000. Wouldn't hurt to get it checked out!

I asked Mini USA and the dealer and they both stated if they couldn't find anything wrong or it was something else going bad that they would still charge me the $150 diagnostic fee. Funny thing is I heard the noise again and I'm not to sure it's the HPFP, today I got my stethoscope and the noise was somewhere else. I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from, except somewhere under the intake manifold.

The noise seems to bounce the sound off the firewall and reflect it everywhere, you can hear it from under the car and everywhere in the engine bay with no direction. Reminds me of my subwoofer in my home theater, close your eyes and you can't tell where it is, non-directional. I thought to myself what part would make a sound like this, it sounds like a ball bearing going bad, I hope it's my main water pump.

I have heard of main water pumps going bad shortly after the thermostat housings, replaced mine late 2013.
