Engine blown??!!?? What??!!??

Just bouht this 2009 mini cooper s with 110.000 miles on it. Had it looked at by 3 spate mechanics that were in no way linked to each other. Car ran/ checked out great, so I bought it. The vehicle has been in my possession for 4 months now. Had an oil change at a local Fleet Farm done about 2 months ago, and everything was great.

Got into a car accident one week ago (was rear ended at about 10-15 MPH). Had some minor body work done to the vehicle, replaced the rear bumper. And now after driving the car for about a week, it starts making 'ALL KINDS' of metal on metal clanking noises. So I roll my eyes and begin to pull it into the shops parking lot (the same shop that did the body repair).

3 days after leaving it in their hands, they call and tell me that they don't fully know what's going on. Only that he knows that all the pistons are misfiring for some reason. There is oil everywhere, and that they are unsure of the situation. I then have it toed to the nearest foreign mechanic, and he tells me that there was a HUGE oil leak (he has no idea where it is), and that I've been driving around without any oil in the engine, and that it is completely dry.... WTF!!!??!!!

He said that I need to pull the entire engine and put in a used one. That there is permanent damage, and rebuilding one is too expensive.

help!!!!! I JUST BOUGHT THIS DAMN THING!! aND LOVED\BABIED it the whole time. What really happened? Anyone else experience this??

Maybe get an oil sample with what's left and send it to Blackstone Labs for analysis.

They can tell you what metals they find and what internal parts they came from.

Did you check your oil weekly? Was the vehicle pushed over any obstruction? Where is the oil leaking from?

Looks like Lucy has some 'splainin' to do.

Sorry for your misfortune. Please let us know what the issue is, and good luck.

Bet the gasket on the oil filter cap split when it was screwed on...happens...but not caught...engine can sometimes gush..or just drip...depends on how it tore...
Or maybe you burn a bit...with 110,000 miles...burning a quart every 1500 is common....then add a leaky turbo line....
Then again....maybe the accident made something rub...cut an oil line...boom...
In any case, an engine swap is the best way to go imo.
AND check your oil...don't wait for the red light...
Red light on means the motor IS ALREADY TOAST.

The only thing I can think of is that when you were rearended the exhaust was hit, the downpipe shifted the turbo and maybe did some damage to oil lines causing all the leaking. Or like someone else mentioned maybe it ran over something and did damage. When you picked up the car from the body shop, was there any noticeable leaking underneath the car? Or did the noises and leaking start to occur a few days after? Seems a bit odd that if the car was bleeding oil at the body shop that they wouldn't tell you about it. I would also say that if you could some how prove that this issue is the result of the accident that you pursue compensation from the driver that hit you. You shouldn't out of pocket any damages caused by the other driver.

If you're looking for a new engine give JM Turbo Coopers a buzz:

Surprised no one mentioned the timing chain tensioner. Could have failed or jumped time having nothing to do with the accident. Metal clanking, piston and valve damage, could leak oil from anywhere. Sorry to hear, hope you find a good motor.
