Where the hell do I get the Engine Number?

Hey guys,

Would really appreciate some help right now. I exported one of my MINIs not too long ago to Peru.

The car has been stuck for months in Customs, a lot of stupid BS so far. I COMPLETELY regret having sent it. This whole thing has been a nightmare and has cost me an enormous of amount of money so far.

To keep this short, I need to find the Engine Number for this car. They have the VIN but the process will not end until I have the Engine Number. Is there any possible way to look it up without seeing it in physically? The Customs Agency is asking for the number to specify it in all the paperwork. Engine was never replaced or anything.

I will have one more opportunity to see the car... Where can I find the plaque or stamping that gives me the unique Engine Number? Has anyone seen it before?

Please guys could really use some advice. Thank you all

I found this on another forum, they say if you look up your VIN in the database for the Build Sheet, it is on there too. I got a build sheet from the dealer, they read it off my key.

"
To give advice on the engine # as you look at the engine from the front of the MINI facing rear-wards the engine # is on the rear of the eng block at the rear left facing the bulk-head where the engine mount bolts too the block (if you look near the oil filter housing you're in the right area) not normally visible after a couple of years without cleaning, however it is also located on a white sticker in a similar place on the rear right of the rocker cover however this # is almost identical but it usually has a # or a letter different (I'm not sure why) than what is on the actual engine block, this is easily noticeable as it's on a large white sticker with a bar-code on-it .

There's two #'s on the sticker it's the long one starting with W10B 16 (engine code), then mine has a combination of 8 # & letters, it's that last combination of letters & #'s that's the engine # on my actual log-book . as I said 1 # or letter is usually different on the previous #'s to what is actually stamped on the engine block, I know the W10B 16 is the engine code & different on Ss (W11B 16), providing the rocker cover hasn't been changed this info should be correct .

On the tag sticker with my ID on it under the bonnet the engine code is actually W10B 16A, the A may account for the extra letter / # that I've been going on about .

This advice is for 1st Gen 1.6 petrol engines only
"

Good luck!

RockAZ thanks for the response. I sent an email last night to a trusted advisor at Prestige BMW and they said > "Unfortunately there is no way to get the original engine number other then off the engine. All I can tell is engine number (N12B16A) or Part number for it (11-00-0-444-886)." <

I'm guessing this has to do with the mass production where they don't track what engine number goes in what chassis. What a pain in the butt. Weird we can see what packages and equipment but not what engine number is on it.

Anyway I'm waiting for him to tell me where is the exact location of this stamp or sticker on the R56/R55. Hopefully something good comes out of this.

I think I found it.

Look at the Engine block near the down pipe. Near the bottm oxygen sensor. For this engine I see N14B16AC in this N14 engine . And some other numbers above that , might be production sequence number for the engine and not the VIN. Also in I can see a flat plate up near the front of the engine , near the oil like connection to the block, there might be other info there but its behind the engine heat resistant plate for the block.

Thanks

Later model engines had a paper sticker there. Too bad that build sheet look up didn't work out, I will check mine later today to see if I have it on my 2008

Yea, the paper sticker would wear away after a while.

As noted above * Also in I can see a flat plate up near the front of the engine , near the oil line connection to the block, there might be other info there but its behind the engine heat resistant plate for the block.
