Finally bought a replacement engine for this project.

2010 base motor with 37k miles. Purchased for $2900. I have not yet had a chance to check it over thoroughly, but at first glance it looks good.

Nice engine and for finding a low mileage engine! I noticed that the engine you took out was a dual overhead cam engine, it looks like an N14, so why does the new engine you found different?

Finally some time for progress on this project. I ended up swapping over the original engine harness. That took a bit of time.

Engine wiring harness:

Also have been gathering fluids, parts for this swap:

Sweet dude. This is the top of the top things you can do to a car. Once you have done this everything else looks easy.

Pothos - you are right about that. But - I don't do body work (well), and I don't venture into transmissions (successfully). Good to know my limitations.

srponies,
What maintenance work, if any, did you do on the (auto?) tranny?
How much tranny fluid leaked out when you un-bloted it from the bell housing? Did you drain any extra? How did much new oil did you fill back in ?

(I just got my own factory rebuilt N14 that will be going into my MCS over the next few weeks...)

As far as the transmission...
I pulled the torque converter off the front of the trans. Poured out a small amount from the converter. Continued pouring a few times until I considered it empty. Then I added approx 1/4 of 1 quart new fluid to the converter and re-installed it.

I am planning to drain the rest of the trans once it is back in the car and before cranking it over. I have 5 quarts of replacement trans fluid.

I've almost caught up to you with my N14 (turbo) engine swap: old engine is out, new one is getting ready to go back in.

Question on the drive-shaft seals - did you replace your old ones before re-inserting the drives-hafts into the tranny?

It took some banging, prying and swearing, but my old shafts came out without any obvious damage (drive-side drive-shaft refused to separate from the steering knuckle, so I removed the knuckle off the strut to buy room instead). Right now I'm tempted to re-insert them into the old seals, assuming I don't butcher them during re-install.

Any other gasket you replaced upon re-install (e.g.: high pressure fuel pump? intake manifold? etc)?

Wish I had seen this before I started my engine removal replacement. In case anyone comes to this thread looking for instructions, I have put together additional info for ya'll. Mine is a Cooper S but the procedure will be the same.
