Forge/alta

So i have a couple questions to put out to everyone. First is the Forge blow off adapter worth it?

It says it goes in between the stock diverter valve and the turbo housing and basically makes it so the pressure vents to the atmosphere rather then being resirculated.

my second question is which blow off valve/diverter valve is better. the Forge unit which cost 290$

I just bought the forge diverter and had a really rocky start because one of the silicone tubes had a small tear and it was a PITA because I was throwing codes left and right and couldn't find it.

At the end of the day I found it and I love it. It's spring actuated so the spool and dump is faster. I do notice as 40 and take my foot of the gas I can feel a tiny tiny bump as it dumps the boost IMHO worth it! I have it paired with a discharge and charge pipe. Even if your not got going for top of the line performance it's built strong and won't fail like the plastic oem ones.

I wouldn't get the bov it sounds cool sure but that gets annoying at some point and the check engine light that will keep popping up are annoying.

Ps. As I was trying to trouble shoot I called forge and they were right there helping and even sent me a new solenoid! Free of charge!!!!! + 1 on forge

If your car is made to have a BPV/recirc valve. It's better to keep it that way unless you want to run rich in between shifts. You are dumping air that was metered by the MAF which was suppose to be recirculated back into your intake for the next spool up. Now you are adding fuel for accounted air that is no longer there.

You don't want the Forge BOV adapter. If your ECU does not recognize air being recirculated you will throw a code and the car will go into limp mode.

The Forge Diverter upgrade has worked for a lot of people. From what I have read it has some quirks (like most things do).

I have the Alta Recirc Valve. I'm not the biggest fan of Alta's stuff. I did get their CAI and had their AccessPort at one point. I sold the AP so I had some extra cash to buy other things. The recirc valve has its own quirks that can be avoided now that I know how. I like it though. I think it's a better option than the Forge for two main reasons: 1) I do plan on increasing my engine's hp and the Alta Recirc holds any boost level. The Forge comes with a stiffer spring but I'm not sure how much boost it holds... 2) The Alta unit has a 'low boost purge' feature. I like this because there's no unnecessary pressure building in the turbo. This saves some wear and tear on the turbo.

Here are my recommendations for getting the Alta: 1) buy some extra resistors. Alta provides a 2.1K ohm 1/4 watt resistor to fool the ECU. It is small, easy to lose, easy to break, and some bending of the wires is required to fit the outlet where the stock diverter plugged in to. I tried barbarically forcing the resistor into this outlet only to have the bent ends touch and short out. So I bought 100 of those resistors, fashioned them to fit perfectly, cleared my CEL with a diagnostic tool and all has been well for a month now. Also, I would recomment running to Lowes or Home Depot and buy some heat shrink tube wrapping and electrical tape and possible some liquid tape. Liquid tape to ensure the resistor stays in the outlet, shrink tube to water proof it, and electrical tape to make sure the shrink tube is sealed and in place. These extra items are cheap and you will still come in below the cost of the Forge unit.

So is there really no difference between the forge and the alta diverter valve then? I also wanted to know what was with the HKS blow off valve because that one appeared to go on the cold side boost tube going in to the throtle? why does that one go over there where as the alta and forge one replace the stock divereter valve?

Those aren't true BOVs. They really are just there to make a noise. There is a difference between the Forge and the Alta. The Alta unit is mechanically operated. I am under the impression that the Forge is still influenced by the ECU. I think a google search will answer your remaining questions on how these operate.

Correct. The forge is also a mechanical spring actuated diverter but there is a solenoid which is still controlled by the Ecu opening and closing it, so you it doesn't pull another set of codes.

As for holding boost; forge does make other springs for holding more boost but without a tune it'll cut out at 20 or something I forget.

Careful with the boost handling assumptions on the Alta. Although it has it's strengths, I missed out on a full day of driving when I blew the membrane on my second hot lap the first time I tracked my car with it. Admittedly, most people aren't going to drive a car as hard as I do but it definitely put me out of business at Road America while I had an OEM part overnight'd. The recirc valve worked fine on the street for a few months.

Car was running an Alta 91 Octane JCW Stage 1 map, and nothing more...So much for the "lifetime part" claim.
