R56 DTC and EDLC in AZ?
DTC and EDLC in AZ?
Hey all, college student here. I'm going to be getting a used base model R56 Mini soon, and I'm trying to decide on what options I want for certain. If I'm not mistaken, the only thing that makes much difference in the sports package is the DTC and EDLC. While trying to research these, I've found a lot of info about how they work on snow, but not too much about whether I should care about them when I live somewhere that literally never snows. This is going to be my daily driver for 90% highway driving. I'll be having some fun doing dumb stuff with the car once in a while, but nothing too dangerous, and no autocross or anything. If I find a well priced car with the sports option then I might as well grab it, but is it something that I should hold out for?
DTC was available as an option outside of the sports package. In fact everything in the sports package was available separately as an option, so sports package or not is a pretty irrelevant thing.
However, as a daily driver, if its never going to be autocrossed or see use on track, the DTC isn't going to make much difference to you. I've been happily driving an 07 (when DTC wasn't an option), and not missing it while driving on the street. The only reason we ordered it for the replacement MINI is because we do autocross and we do drive them on the track, where it might make a difference (and I'm not even sure about that). On the street the DSC is fully on, all the time.
Just for completeness, I'll mention that the sports package also includes the sports seats (which are available separately). That would make a great deal of difference to me if I didn't have them. After having sports seats, I found the non sports version quite uncomfortable. There's also the 16" wheels, which give you a different set of options in tires sizes (there's no obviously good 15" sizes.) The spoiler is probably purely cosmetic (but may help keep the back Window clean). The fog lights are a good idea, but I wouldn't be unhappy without them. We opted for no stripes anyway.
We had the sports package on both the 07 and the new Cooper. In the days before DTC, it included DSC as an option. DSC is definitely something I wouldn't want to be without. Like I said, DSC used to be an option (in or out of the sports package), I'd pay more attention to whether your potential MINI has it, you might find one with just ATC (traction control).
Another common misconception about the sports package is that it includes the sport suspension. It doesn't, that was a separate option. I'm not sure the sport suspension would make much difference outside of autocross or track use either, but I like it (we've ordered it on all our R56 MINIs).
PS: What year of MINI are you looking at? The options changed over time.
