P0128 question

2011 MCS, 30000+ miles. Last week the car decided to throw its latest tantrum and my code reader says P0128. I can't read the Mini codes with my cheapy reader, the P0128 could be the thermo or the CTS.

That's not really my question though. When I shut the car off, the fan is obliged to run 7-10 minutes. Why? I have to wait a ridiculous number of days before Mini of Nashville can get it in for service.

I worried about the fan running. The engine doesn't seem any hotter to me, seems way cooler in fact - still, fan running. Doesn't seem good to me.

This morning I accessed the so-called "hidden" service menu. I did the VIN code unlock thing and accessed menu 7. While the ATMP-MOM seemed to display the ambient(?) temperature, the CTMP-MOM just displayed "***oC" the whole time I drove the car, leading me to believe the CTS is giving no reading at all. I'm trying to research this now. Of course, the fan continues to blow...

How applicable this would be to your 2011 I'm not sure, however my 2012 MCS received a new temp sensor with it's first scheduled maintenance. My SA said it was part of a "campaign" to replace these.

I hadn't noticed anything "wrong", no real issues, but with the replacement sensor my cooling fan only runs 60-90 seconds after shutoff, versus several minutes after with the original one.

It is a known issue with a coolant temp sensor, I had this problem on my 2012 MCS. I got P10D0, P15E8, and P0128 at various times - CEL would come on with the 1/2 power symbol but the car ran fine and it would clear after a restart or two.

Dealer replaced it under warranty.
