R56 Routing Garmin Cable...is this okay?
Routing Garmin Cable...is this okay?
Hello. I've been searching and reading and do not find any posts that describe how I routed my Garmin cable....and I was hoping for reassurance it's okay this way. I slid the handle of a wire fly swatter next to the underside of the steering wheel column. It went right through without hitting anything...seemed safe. I looped the end of the cable round the handle and carefully pulled it through to the front of the steering wheel column and tucked things in. I have attached pics that show how it's routed. I wanted to see if anyone knows if this is not a safe way to route the cable. Thanks in advance for helping the mechanically challenged. okay...I can't figure out how to add more than one pic so I put three in my gallery.....the attached one shows where it goes in from the back. The one that shows the tach is where it comes out between the steering column and dash. Thanks again.
I hardwired mine in at the cig lighter. I ran the cable from there under the side knee pad visible in your picture, then just jumped across under the panel underneath the steering column. I have the Craven mount for Garmin that is a bracket that screws on the back of the tach head. I just brought the cable up the left hand side of the column across to the back of the tach to the Garmin. If I don't have the Garmin in, the cable end just kind of hangs there on the mount. the extra cable I just have bundled up under that panel. The way I have mine routed, you have to watch it a little if you adjust your wheel up or down or in, out. I have mine set but it can interfere with movement if you aren't a little watchful. Mine's been there of about a year without any issues. I have a 2965.
I ran mine from the cig lighter, to under the knee guard (by removing the knee guard, it's pretty easy) and then up alongside the door to the mount in the left corner of the dash. I used a little metal S hook and twisted it to loop around the cord, and the other end of the hook grabs the edge of the dash itself. Stays up and out of the way, and have had no issues.
Thanks, MikewithaMini and JoanieB. I'm glad to hear you have done similar routings and not had problems. Mike, yours sounds pretty much the same as mine except I have my Craven mounted to the right instead of the left. I will watch the moving of the steering wheel.
Appreciate the help! Now I'm really ready for the road trip to Eastern WA wine country next week. :-)
