R56 new bmw engine for 2014 mini??????
new bmw engine for 2014 mini??????
Hello Mini owners does anybody have access to pics of the new bmw engine for Mini in 2014 or info on that engine bmw has built for our gen 3 mini coming out in 2014 "THANK" MINIINHD
1.5l 3 cylinder
The 3 cylinder is only for the (non Turbo) Coopers right now. So if you ordered an S, you will have the same engine as the 2013.... if I'm wrong, someone will come on and say so.

I'm not 100% but from what I remember, I saw an intercooler on the 3 cylinder image.
You are mistaken, after speaking to some of the guys at motoring file, it's a 3 cylinder turbo. All MINIs will have them now. How do you figure such a bump in power I believe at 150hp.
I had read this when we were considering ordering a Mini and this pushed us to get a 2013. I just can't own a 3 cylinder car, regardless of how efficient or how much power it can make...
I read somewhere that the 2014 JCW's will get a 2.0L 4 cylinder motor, but I didn't want to take a chance....
It's a mental thing with me, probably not logical, but there it is....

As of June 7th, 2013, this is what Automobilemag said:
Under the hood, we can expect Mini Cooper S models to continue with turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Today’s car has a 1.6-liter turbo-four rated for 181 hp; the John Cooper Works variant offers 208 hp, and the limited-edition GP model tops the range with 211hp. Base models of the new Cooper, however, will likely adopt a fuel-efficient three-cylinder engine. The new Mini will be built on a platform shared with the upcoming front-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series.

And Motoring File says this:
The secret has been out for years now that MINI and BMW will be introducing a new family if 1.5L three cylinder engines destined for small front wheel drive cars. But would MINI be replacing all four cylinders with equivalent 3 bangers? Our sources are now telling us that looks unlikely for at least the first iteration of the next generation MINI family. Instead we now believe that MINI will likely continue to use an updated version of the four cylinder “Prince” engine for Cooper S and JCW models through at least 2015.

If there is new info on replacing all of the F56's with the 3 cylinders in 2014, I would love to see the link!
They are expected to phase them in, so 2014 would only have changes to the base model.

Found an article from Feb 13, 2013, in which Motoring File said:
" Our sources are now telling us that the three cylinders are just part of the story. According to people internal at MINI familiar with the matter, the next generation of Cooper S and JCW models will be powered by the entirely new 2.0L four cylinder that will be shared across all front wheel drive BMWs and MINIs. Power and MPG are expected to be up as well as potential for tuning. And while both engines represent big leaps for MINI, we believe it’s the the massively more capable 2.0L that will get enthusiasts salivating.
So one new car and two radically new engines. In fact one source has told us that spotting the differences is quite easy – even under the yellow and black swirled camouflage. If you see a MINI prototype with one exhaust pipe it has a three cylinder engine. If it has two in the center, it’s a MCS or JCW with a four.
MINI intends on spreading the three cylinders across the MINI One and Cooper models initially. Sources are telling us that power ratings should be slightly higher than the current range on both the three and four cylinder models. But it’s the efficiency gains and the weight losses that are the big story. We’ve been told to not be surprised to see US Spec Cooper achieve upper 40 mpg figures on the highway. Additionally the engines should be measurably lighter and allow for better weight distribution front to rear.
Ultimately we believe that the three cylinder engines will not only make their way to the hatch based models but also other MINIs as well. For instance don’t be surprised to see the base Cooper Countryman eventually get the ultra efficient power plant in a late cycle update."
We won't know for sure until we can actually buy them, but at this time, the best bet is that only the F56 Cooper (non S) will have the 3 cylinder.

great info, thanks folks. This will be interesting to watch....
Just as an aside and something that was mentioned in one of the above posts regarding the Minis and BMW's sharing platforms. Another reason we wanted to jump on a 2013.
I fully get the corporate reasoning for doing this(saving untold amounts of money having to engineer only to a single platform for multiple models), but would that idea move more and more into the cabin design for Mini as well?(I read here somewhere that sources say starting in 2014 the centrally located speedo will be gone, for instance).
As usual, a lot of what is said now is just heresay, but there is so much talk swirling around, I'm sure some of it's true.....it makes me wonder if the Mini "identity" will begin becoming diluted and become nothing more than a British branded BMW model?
I mean, didn't they move the window switches to the freakin' doors like every "normal car", on the 2013 Countryman for gosh sakes ?

That's good info from MF. There was a rumor of the N20 motor finding its way into the next gen MINI, which would be a riot. With a quick tune, you'd have a 275 hp MINI that gets nearly 40mpg.
the 4 cl turbo? no way, it would be too sweet for us to handle...
The N20 would be hot **** for the MINI platform. That would be a fun engine swap!!! I still am a non believer in the 3 cylinder engine. Diesel would have been better. That ship has sailed though!
