MTF is MTF; I don't think MTF-94 is specific to MINI, though they seem to 'MINI package' it and charge accordingly.

It was originally marketed by Texaco, I believe, and used in Rover, MINI, Honda, and LandRover transmissions to name a few.

I've used LandRover MTF-94 in the past and recently Carplan MTF-94, who seem to be refreshing the product and 'putting it out there' more in UK at the moment. They recommend it for our MINIs, along with others.

Easily identifiable, it has a unique smell a light honey colour and is really 'slippery'. I've tried a rival synthetic 75w/80 and the gears weren't as slick so I comforted myself by looking at it as an expensive 'flush' and replaced it.

I now keep 3 x 1litre packs of MTF-94 on my shelf at all times, since it took a little over 2.2l to fill my N18. IMO my transmission remains slick and solid without a hint of notchiness. It's not difficult or expensive to change out and I plan to do it every 2 years or so.

It's no more a 'lifetime fluid' for me than engine oil, brake fluid and coolant and I make a point of buying it where I can get the best value-for-money.

...but not sure it's the 75w/80 MTF that we know is right for our MINIs if its viscosity range is 5w/30.

Applications:

Recommended for automotive and light-truck applications that require synchromesh transmission fluid. Applications include manual transmissions and transaxles such as New Venture NV T350, NV 1500, NV 2550, NV 3500, NV 3550, NV 5600, and Tremec T4, T5, T18, T56, T176, TKO500, TKO600, TR 3450 and TR 3550. Replaces MTF-94 fluid for Land Rover, MG, and MINI COOPER. Replaces Honda Genuine MTF fluid for manual transaxles and Texaco MTX fluid. Not for use in engines, hypoid rear axles, limited-slip or wet-clutch applications.

Works fine so far in mine....

...good enough for me since it openly replaces MTF-94 in those models that I know about. Plus there's a Texaco connection and it's synthetic. Good vibes.

I'd be happy to use this. I wonder why it's a 5w/30 though? My first thoughts were that's an engine oil isn't it?

yes I reckoned about 2.2 -> 2.3 litres before it started dribbling out the 'level' hole when back on all 4 wheels. Your quart is slightly less than a litre I think. (1litre =1.06 US quart) so you might need part of that third quart, I feel.

I overfilled it whilst tilted and let it dribble into a container whilst levelled back on all wheels for a few mins then jacked it back up and screwed the plugs back in. Good to flush it, too.

What about using Motul Gear Comeptition FF for a Mini GPII? Specs are 75w-140 against the MTF-94's 75w-80.

I used this in two track cars with excelent results (Impreza WRX STI, Renault Clio 182) but I was wondering if GP's gearbox will like it, not really sure.

What do you think?

It viscosity is 5w/30 but protects like a 75w/80..thats what makes this oil so much better...shifts like silk.. Amsoil is a superior product..Hands down I wouldn't use anything else..lol

I was going to purchase the Amsoil MTF until I read "Not for use in engines, hypoid rear axles, limited-slip or wet-clutch applications." I have the OEM LSD so I'm nervous about using the MTF. Would the Amsoil MTG be better suited? Has anyone used this before?

Phew! I thought you were seriously implying that the diff in a Mini was independant of the trans and had it's own lube like a RWD lol.

The part number for OEM Mini MTF is 83-22-0-403-247, we have it for $20.14 per liter. You should need approximately two liters.

After changing my MTF recently at 50k miles, I was surprised at how clean the fluid was coming out of the case. Still looked golden. However, I did put in Redline MTF (2 qts plus a small amount out of a third). This is easier than doing an oil change and would highly suggest it to any DIY'er.

So far, the Redline MTF allowes the trans to operate smoothly and shifts just as it did with OEM fluid.
