Which is the better oil weight and viscosity, 75W80, 75W85 or 75W90?

Depends on your climate. If it never gets really cold, 80 weight would be a little thin. If it does get cold where you're at 90 might be a tad heavy. I've run RedLine MTL and MT85 here in Omaha and both have performed fine. A bit notchy when ice cold, but you should really let it warm up before driving the car anyway. I'm not sure what weight it is but GM Syncromesh is a great trans lube, but is very very notchy in nature it seems and can feel notchy and tough all winter, warm or not.

Does anybody know what comes in our 6-speed transmissions from the factory as far as weight and viscosity? Is it GL-4?

I'm not expert but i dont really think you will notice to much of a difference between a W80 and W90. I believe the MTL is a 75w80 so thats what i would recommend. i live in the NW and since i've put Redline MTL in my trany i have experienced temps as hot as 100 degrees and recently as low as 6 degrees and it shifts smooth no matter what.

Smoother than what the factory put in our transmission?

In my experience, yes. Also consider, whether it's RedLine, GM, Royal Purple, MINI, BMW whatever, fresh lube in there is going to feel nicer than 50, 60, 80 thousand mile fluid. But the RedLine MTL and MT85 both have given me great results in my MINI.

I have about 8k miles on the Amsoil Syncromesh in my 08 R56 S. So far so good. It gets a little stiff in the mornings, but I expect that when it's -23 ha ha.

Redline MTL

Was -4 degrees here a couple weeks ago, mine shifted like I'd been driving it all day. I have no reason to try anything else from here on out.

don't the specs for amsoil's mtf line up more closely with our transmissions than the synchromesh? the synchromesh is not gl-4, and a little bit on the thin side, which i guess is fine for colder climates. i used Amsoil MTF for my trans, shifted just fine

I just wanted to make sure that I'm understanding everything correctly. Amsoil's Synchromesh is labeled MTF, and is the recommended fluid replacement for our Minis. So you used the Synchromesh (MTF) without an issue, or used the 75W-90 (MTG) without an issue. Here is a link to both http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...al/?zo=2056145
Much thanks for the clarification.

I can't believe how much smoother my shifting is even when cold!

I have 52k on my MCS and didn't expect to find out that someone else (probably CarMax) had already change the transmission oil, my magnetic plugs didn't have any metal shavings at all and whatever was in there was fresh! Whatever was in there was too heavy MTL, now I know why it was notchy all the time. All I can say is Red Line is some pretty high end MTL! It was soo notchy before and smoother with RL even when cold.

yep. i've seen a lot of people use the amsoil synchromesh, not sure why to be honest. we had a discussion about this in another thread, and we basically determined there that tha amsoil 75w90 mtf was the appropriate fluid to go with.

Nice job, I use the same pump. I was wondering how is your car so clean, then I saw it's a 2013. Our MCS is pushing 98k.

I was considering Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 for my car with the factory LSD. Just got off the phone with Mobil 1 and the tech support guy said he could find no application for my car and suggested it may be manufacturer specific. I'm still looking.

ha! I had an '08 with about that much mileage: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...52-post96.html probably a little closer to what you were expecting

check here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-07-non-s.html

i go through the search. Basically, I don't think it matters if you do 75w80,85, or 90, but you just have to make sure the fluid is GL-4. For me personally, Amsoil MTF 75w90 checks all those boxes. and I like that it's a little thicker, just because I'm racing the car.

You are correct about Amsoil's MTF being GL4. See the data sheet within the product info. http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...al/?zo=2056145

Drain/Fill Plugs' Gaskets & Torque

Hi:
1. Does Drain and/or Fill Plugs use Gaskets?
If Yes, P/N for a Mini 2012 R56 Manual, please.

2. Where to find Torque values for theese plugs?

Thanks

Hi Apprentice.
My Haynes manual says 43Nm or 32 lbft for the drain/level plugs but I always do them by 'feel'.
To the best of my ability I can't remember there being a copper washer or gasket.
