R56 burning oil/oil loss? NA engine

burning oil/oil loss? NA engine
our 2008 mini has almost 40k miles on it. two weeks ago, I was making a sharp corner and oil light flashed on/off. I stopped car, waited 5 minutes and checked the level and it was ok, not low/not high
Yesterday the wife was driving the car. made a hard stop and same thing light comes on and goes off.
TOday I checked the oil level and it was just touching the tip of the oem dipstick. I added oil and it is again at about the half way mark.
Doesn't look or smell like it is burning oil out the back but it is odd that it ran itself almost dry. No leaks that I can see and nothing on our garage floor either.
We take it for normal service at the correct intervals and this has never happened before and we bought the car with 8000 miles on it.
