Hi
i just bought my first mini and im very happy about it.
This is a DIY project, so here are a few of my problems
The car does starts but it feels slow, so i tried the auto transmission in manual and it shows an M3 on the screen. Even if i try to put it on D and the press any of the paddle on the steering wheels it shows the same.
The previous owner mentions that it might need a computer programming??
Please any help will be great, and no i dont want to go to the dealer yet, will be very expensive.
Wow, can anybody at least tell me how to reset the automatic transmission? I read in a couple of forums that if is stuck in 3rd gear could be reset again to work normal?
Also how do i know if the car came with xenon, and auto dim mirror?
thanks!
I believe the "M" means it's in a paddle shifting mode. So the paddles should work. If they aren't it's time to visit the dealer.
You can't reset the transmission. I think what someone means is resetting the transmission's own ECU. Sometimes called a TCU. If you want to reset all the car's electronics, disconnect your battery, and let the car sit overnight. When you connect the battery the next morning, the car's electronic system is reset.
Thanks Countryboyshane and Flako, im getting a usb obd scanner next week.
I found out that the transmission is leaking fluid thru the gasket, so next weekend ill proceed to change the fluid including the strainer, and new gasket.
Also any way to know if this car came with xenon, because (keep in mind that this is a project from a crashed car) right now it came with some halogen chinese replicas and is stuck in high beam only.
thanks again.
You can also try and use the shifter on the floor to see if it shifts manually or is truly stuck in third. Bring the shifter down to drive, then push it to the left. This should get a 'DS' on the speedo (Drive-Sport). See if it drives any different, the shift points should be higher. With the shifter in the same position, you can push it forward or back to shift manually. This should isolate if your issue is related to the paddle shifters or not.
Hi
i put it on Drive and then push left for steptronic, and all i got was M3, so i guess is in limp mode.
Im waiting for the full maintenance kit, then ill post some updates. thanks!!

P0130 Before catalyst oxygen sensor (i got this one, because both sensor are damaged, just waiting for replacement to arrive)
P2251 O2 Oxygen sensor before (same as previous item)
P115D Mass Air Volume Flow A too high (what is A?)
P0036 HO2S Heater circuit (bank 1 sensor 2 . what is it and where is located?)
P0300 Combustion miss *will find out

Hi I’ve just recently brought my first car a 2008 Mini Cooper S R56, I brought the car aware of some issues and have since resolved them (replaced CAS module system, replaced valve body including automatic transmission fluid, gasket and filter, I have also replaced the vanos solinoid sensor) all the warning lights have since been resolved except the transmission warning light that is still appearing consistently and has not provided a fault code of any sort on my diagnostic scanner I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue or has any guides to what might cause this light to appear? The photo below is not mine but is the exact light appearing on my dash.
Hello, how did u fix it? i have the same issue, write me an email if you can on mariancrivat@gmail.com. On cold starts it appears once and then it does not appear anymore. Thanks!

If you're getting an error only on cold starts, I'd suspect a fluid level issue. The MINI Aisin/Warner automatic gearbox doesn't have a traditional dipstick; fluid must be checked with the fluid within a specific temperature range, vehicle level, and then the drain plug must be accessed to determine if the fluid is high enough to exceed the fill tube height integrated in to the drain plug. It's difficult to do unless you have multiple jack stands or a lift.
MINI did not have a service interval for the transmission fluid when these cars were sold originally, so many of them have never had the filter/fluid changed or even checked. This is where I would start.
