R56 Sport Button question
Sport Button question
Hi Turning on today the Sport button on my mini and noticed the quicker throttle response ,but i can't say i feeled the same with the heavier-tighter steering.
maybe is my idea and is working right but i will check it out again
Can it be some sort of error in steering in sport mode?i enjoy driving it with sport on
Thanks

I've had a car with the sport button for 5+ years now and the 'difference' is so noticeable that I can count the times I've had "sport on" on one hand . . . .
I KNOW I'll be bashed and dis'd but the Sport Button is just bling to me.

No bashing from me, Capt. I agree with you. It just changes the "mapping" between your foot and the throttle position, and the amount of boost from the power steering system. Doesn't do anything that you can't do for yourself--except for sounding like a mis-tuned carburetor (AKA "burble and pop" on decel on the S models).

LOL you just keep telling yourself that . . . but as long as your happy thats all that matters
actually it changes a lot more than that, and it's nothing you can do yourself without tuning. it changes the response of the throttle, also tightens the steering, and if you have auto (with my condolences) it changes the shift points. none of this can be replicated without modification.
and it sounds to me like felines was saying you can just push the throttle more or turn the wheel further to get the same response. I totally agree with you on the sport button being worthwhile but that's what I thought felines was saying
Yes, that's exactly what I was saying.
I did forget about the auto shift points--but I don't have an auto, so it didn't come to mind.
Hey--if you like it, more power to you. But I don't think it's worth the bother.

For auto straight Coopers, it's worth it. The car is friskier, the steering tighter, feels like you just gave it an Energy drink. It's rather fun. No, it doesn't make the car into a Ferrari... but we didn't pay for a Ferrari. We have two base Coopers, and a little gallop on the weekends is all we need to grin.
For some reason I think I am the only one that feels this way but I think the throttle is way to sensitive with the sport button on. After the first little bit of push with the foot it's basically an on off switch. I think some type of sport button is needed but its way too sensitive. Non sport mode is obviously a little slow on response.
It's like MINI is trying to mimic a really fast free flowing engine in a very cheap way. On my 86 Porsche 911 you mash the throttle and take your foot off, the tach will go from 1500rpm to 7000 rpm and back to 1500 rpm in a heart beat. Same thing with my dads 1999 911.
On the mini it goes up quick but falls slow. Obviously something lagging in the system that electronics can't overcome.

I like it and can definitely feel the difference. And, I love the decal popping!
From the manual:
Sport button
Pressing the button causes your MINI to respond
even more sportily.
> Engine responds more spontaneously to
movements of the accelerator.
> Steering response is more direct.
> Cooper S, John Cooper Works: the engine
sounds more sporty in coasting mode.
With automatic transmission:
> More rapid gear shifting in Sport program.

I agree with this. I've turned on Sport Mode all of 3 times in the past year. Sport mode feels "artificial" to me when it's on, like I know in the back of my mind that it's just an electronic re-mapping of its normal state. Never felt I absolutely needed it, even in a regular Clubman.
I use it when I autocross...turn it on and turn the traction control off. Other then that I use it very rarely...there are one or two places around me that I can drive the car to the point that the sport button helps.
Same here. and after my JCW warms up the pops and burbles are the same with and without the sport button. On cooler days with the sport button on it will actually backfire a lot, and only do it a little without it on. But I am with you on when I use it.
One of the other HS MINIs around here reckons sport mode is worth about 2s a run to him. I wouldn't know because we have an auto-sport mode mod. I find it very difficult to drive the car without sport mode on, and I can tell when the wife has forgotten to turn it on in the JCW (which hasn't had the mod installed yet), just by hearing her drive off.
I use the sport button all the time, every time.
I click in the seat belt and push the sport button every time I drive.
On the rare occasion I forget to use the sport button, I'll know at a red light when I nearly clonk out when shifting.
To me, manual trans and the sport button ON is the only way to drive a Mini.

the sport button does not produce any more power

the throttle pedal to throttle plate motion is linear with the sport button off and progressive with sport button on
translated to english,
sport button on, you give 1/4 throttle and the ECU gives you 1/2 throttle
sport button off, you give 1/4 throttle and the ECU gives you 1/4 throttle
