what is this light???

Hey this is probably a dumb question but I can not figure out what this light is for and how to turn it on. Its the lights immediately next to the reverse lights under a red lens.

I believe it is rear fog lights. Do you have a full toggle switch bank on the dash?

Fog light. If you did not order the Rear Fog Light option you will not have a switch in the switch bank of the car for it but it should be able to be retro fitted.

Search on rear fogs here to find out more. Some years they were not retrofitable as the wiring was not in place.

Haha I've got the same lights... No switch, looks like there's a bulb in there, seems kind of a waste to install a light at the factory but then not make it work. I guess you do have to order the rear fog light option to have them actually operate. Silly if you ask me

Wish I had those! I used to flash them in my mother's Justa when people were riding too close.

It all comes down to a cost thing. These are manufactured and assembled for easy install at another factory that is not MINI owned. If MINI were to order the item in 2 different configurations, one with a bulb and one without a bulb then it would require storing two separate items in the warehouse. The cost to do that is significantly higher than the cost of the bulb, probably in the range of 100 times the cost of the bulb.

So although it seems silly to us here in reality it is a very cost effective way of manufacturing the part.

Alternatively, if you'd just like to get the lights working, you can hard wire them to your existing tail lights or brake lights and create a little more illumination at the back of your car.
