Hi

I was wondering if anyone is using the Royal Purple 5w30 High Performance Street Motor Oil?

http://www.royalpurple.com/product-categories/automotive/#!hps-motor-oil

I'm due for a oil change and want to try something new.

Can someone direct me a link to get Official BMW/MINI motor oil. I'm looking to get a dozen but I can't find it anywhere online. I don't want to get it at the dealer.

Thanks

I ran the RP for about 50k miles just fine. They do have a 0W40 out now that meets the LL01 spec, but I never tried it.

Update: After some more research, it does not appear the RP 0W40 is LL01 rated. It does meet the ACEA A3/B3 spec.

I used to use Royal Purple but have switched to using Amsoil Signature Series and like it much better.

I have been using mobile 1 in mine because RP didn't have (or I couldn't find) the LL oil. I will look for that next time I am in the shop. Are yall using the stock filters from mini? That is all I have used to this point. Sean

Sean,

LL is just a certification, not a specific type of oil. Many won't go after all the certifications because they are expensive. For instance, I use Amsoil signature series which meets and exceeds LL-04 certifications.

If you are under warranty and are afraid that they might try to void your warranty (even though I have never heard of it happening) you can stick with the LL-01 certified oils.

The bottom line is that there are some excellent oils (Motul, Redline, Amsoil etc...) that provide great protection for your engine and shouldn't simply be discarded because they haven't gone through the certification process. Frankly my MINI actually runs better on Amsoil then it did on the MINI recommended oils. I used to burn though Mobile 1 like it was going out of style but the Amsoil don't do this and I have noticed an increase in gas milage as well.

I did not realize that it was only a certification, thanks for clearing that up. I have always used it in my tundra but I thought the LL-01 was a different type of oil so I just used mobile 1 in the mini. Sean

LL is basically long life (extended oil change intervals). I wouldn't go the Mini recommended 15K anyway. I'm good at 6K and if nothing else it gives me piece of mind. I use Mobil 1 0/40w europeon formula. It is rated LL.

I used to use Castrol Titanium 5/30w but it's not certified as LL but I'm sure it's still ok as long as you don't go the 15K.

This, of course, is just my assertation of the subject. I'm no authority.

If you go to www.miniusa.com there is a section where you can email them with questions but I never have received a return ans. Also, there is a section that shows some recommended oils.
