Look for a 2008-2009 CPO hyundai santa fe with a V6 or buy a base 2012 hyundai tuscon
and take the factory low apr finance deal to offset the higher purchase price.

Hyundai... I was thinking maybe BMW X3 or Toyota something. I have been thinking all day and nothing really catches my attention like a MINI. Maybe I'll get a JCW and regret selling all these parts =p

Glad you are ok . Accidents are never fun. I am still hurting 1 1/2 years later with two fractured thoracic vertebrae and one has not healed. After spending many months car shopping (had to find something that allowed me to drive without back pain) for 15- 20 K I still would consider going for the base Countryman but if you can't then the following falls into your range. Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tuscon or Nissan Juke. Good luck.

Omg Wow!!! That's crazy!!! btw I think it's pretty cool how it turns into a bubble inside whenever there's a wreck.. I'm always glad to hear these stories to prove to other people (ESPECIALLY MY MOTHER) that minis are just as safe as any other car, if not.. even more safer it looks like. I remember seeing a texas mini vs. a chevy tahoe and the mini won.

The problem is a lot of people are of the old school thinking from the old days.... cars with full frames that weighed a ton and when smash into something, would hardly dent a bumper.

Then they look at a mini (or whatever) and say “Thank God we weren’t in that car, it’s crumpled”.

They don’t understand that the unibody and these small cars are designed to crumple up, that’s why they have crush zones built into the sheetmetal.

The reason they did this is because in the old days, when I full framed car would hit something, it wouldn’t give but where does the energy go? The passengers in the vehicle would slam forward and usually give them whiplash.

We as humans are treated much like eggs in a carton. The reason eggs are not in a metal container is because if you were to drop the container, the eggs would smash. Nowadays, the eggs are in a cardboard or styrofoam container so if you do drop them, the container absorbs the energy and protects the eggs. (to the best extent you can protect an egg...lol)

Well, we are the eggs. The car manufacturers make the cars so they crumple and absorb the energy (thus why you hardly ever hear of anyone getting whiplash when the hit something. (different when you’re rear ended))

They protect the contents and get to sell you a new car.

Everyone’s happy.

Mark,

Love your analogy!!! But if you are Tboned by someone doing 50mph and accelerating, your body is not going to absorb that imact very well. Problem was that I saw it coming and had no time to react other than to slam on the brakes and well hold on for dear life. Had I not done what I did, I probably would not be here today. Doctors have told me that I am lucky that I am able to walk. (hence Mr Lucky) The vehicle that hit me wasn't in too bad a shape considering. 2007 BMW X3 driven by a 16 y/o with two other 16 y/os in the vehcle making a left turn where the two left lanes had red arrows and the three youths thought that it was my fault.
Thanks for letting me rant.

You’re correct but that’s the point... your body is not suppose to absorb the shock (of course your body will be sore and take some abuse) I mean the car is designed (even in a side impact) for the door braces to take the force, they are meant to crush, if they were solid and wouldn’t give, I assure you that you would be tossed around like a hot potato.

I was just making the point that people see a little car crushed and they immediately think “OMG, someone probably died in that wreck” when in reality, the crumpling of the car into a small cube probably saved someone’s life.

And yes, I completely agree, when it happens, most of the time all people can do is hang on for dear life screaming “ oh sh-t, this is gonna hurt”. I know I did when I hit the wall at VIR running 120.

Your point was well taken. It's the old american vehicle manufacturer bs that bigger is better. We all know now that it just isn't true. I would rather be in a small car that handles well than in a big monstrosity (Lincoln Town Car, Buick Lacrosse, Chevy Tahoe etc) When someone dies in a crash it could very well have occurred by them not using their seat belts. Seat belts are designed with the thought of preventing the wearer from being catapulted out of the car. When I was hit I remember hitting my head above the door frame.

Thanks Mark. My car definitely absorbed. This is day two of my injury just waking up. Neck isn't any more sore. Still haven't taken a single drug (not even aspirin). I think I'll be perfect in two more days.

And my car will definitely buff out =]
I wonder how much to buy the totaled car? Like $1500?

Here is a good analogy of what happens when a big heavy thing hits a solid wall compared to the light weight object hitting the same wall. Take an 8oz dixie cup and an 8oz glass and throw them on the asphalt. Which one will break and which one will merely dent?!!?!

I had a Honda 600 Sedan that I flipped end over end and then rolled down a road. After changing a flat tire and pushing it onto its feet we then drove away. It was a mess but it still worked and my passenger and I were OK after the 50mph incident!

I will take small and light anyday

On a side note, has anyone used "Deer Whistles"???

Never used deer whistles. Heard they work though. Hide them in your grille =]

And to everyone PM'ing me about parts. I'll be busy today.
So text or call (765)277-0811 please

If it goes to voicemail more than likely I'm in the shop and get no signal. Just leave a message or text

Such a pain

yes you can probably negotiate to buy it back for parts I would not attempt to rebuild it. To be honest with you , a collision with the deer would have been better at least then, the accident would have been a non chargeable one. I remember my daughter had one of those and I had to file a Deer Kill incident report with the Connecticut State Police. It went through on the comprehensive portion of our policy.

good luck with

My car had $23K worth of damage. I bought it back from the insurance company for 3500 bucks.

In your case, I wouldn’t touch that car...lol. You probably won’t be allowed to pull any parts of it. The reason I say that is because when they give you the amount for your car, they are buying based on what it’s worth. Point is, if you do get paid for aftermarket parts (which if you point them out to the insurance company, you will get some compensation)

The amount they are paying for the car will be based on obviously it’s value (which includes any mods)

Just sayin’....

Mark, it all depends... As long as he hasn't signed any forms with the insurance co, or taken any money, the car is still his and he can exchange any aftermarket parts with the stockers, (or any other part).

OBTW, you all need to make a life choice. How big an animal are you willing to hit and kill to avoid a much worse accident?

Squirrel? DEAD
Groundhog? DEAD,
Deer? dead.
dog? dead.
Moose? ELK? people? I think I'll avoid them and take my chances, thank you very much...

Absolutely, if he does it before he settles with the insurance company, he can get away with it. Of course, it will lower the price he will receive but 99% of the time, he’s still better off.

I mentioned it earlier because if the car is considered a total, most insurance companies will automatically send it to their total loss department. If that happens, they won’t allow you to touch the car (except to get personal items).
