1st gen R53's scoop is functional...second gen R56's scoop is...sort of functional in the '08 and later cars. Lot's of cars have nonfunctional scoops... just eye candy.

First and foremost, probably cosmetic to distiguish it from a JAC. And while it doesn't provide the same function as in the 1st Gen MINI's, it is in close proximity to the Turbo providing some venting of trapped heat and induction of cooler air while on the road.

Lots of 2nd Gen owners have been dremeling the scoops fake vent areas to provide added flow. Some have even removed the grille all together....

MINI techs use engine degreaser and a water hose when cleaning the R56 engine bay...it doesn't get any wetter than that

Seems to me the screen is mostly there for those larger objects like leaves and cigarette butts, and not so much rain water while driving.....

Those who have taken the time to do so have logged lower under bonnet temps with this mod.

The minis that are supercharged have a top mount intercooler. 02-06 MCS came with a supercharger so they added the hoodscoop for air flow. the r56 mCS have turbos but i believe the convertibles still have a supercharger and still run a top mount intercooler. but yes it is just eye candy but apperently it still cools down the motor a good amount if you dremel out the holes that are filled...or jsut get a performance one, Depends if you want to spend the money or not

The stock plug to the hood scoop is almost 2 inches thick. Dremel out the holes all you want, you won't get that much air through to the engine... If you truly want air and no bugs/rocks/etc...

... not true...

I just ground my scoop grill from the back, I didn't have to dremel each individual hole and it still looks great. Plus, all the holes are opened up and I didn't have to by a new grill.

Two inches thick!? I don't think you've actually had the grill out of the scoop and seen it!

The last convertible to run the s/c was the 08s. 09 and newer run the turbo motor.

Okay, almost an inch and a half... It's sitting just inside my front door and a MINI, being small will not fit through my door.... I spent a couple dollars on the MINI Fini grill.

I may try that too, coupled w/ the vented hood that should be fairly effective.

The grille is no wheres near thick as 1.5 inches...."Maybe" 5/8 of an inch at best.....This mod just performed on my friends 2011 Clubman.....Since neither of us had done this before, we got another grille from a melted bonnet scoop so he would have the original one just in case.

He did the work and it came out perfect.

It gives the turbo something to melt.

Just FYI . Went in for my 3rd replacement hood scoop for warping probs. This time they added a heat deflector (under warranty)... Simple plate attached to the hood on the upper side of the scoop. Hood seemed cooler after a medium run. Only time will tell.

Has anyone bought one of those shields that blocks the turbo heat from melting the hood scoop? http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/G2.../InvDetail.cfm

Is it necessary or should I rely on my warranty to cover this if it ever happens?

Paul, they did that to mine too, I got there with 49,967 miles and got a new scoop and S/S heat shield. The next ones on me, hopefully there wont be a next one. Tried to work w/ them to get a C/F or chrome one, they wouldnt budge. Some customer satisfaction quotient. :(

I see a lot more complaints about chrome scoops melting than any other styles here on this forum. could the metalic finish conduct the heat to the plastic underneath faster?

On my 2010 MINI, it looks like there's a heatshield already protecting the scoop, I bought it new and it just came that way.
