R56 the ups and downs of checkerboard stripes
the ups and downs of checkerboard stripes
decided to do a 12" centered checkerboard stripe on my 09 s on both the front and back to cover bumpers scoop etc. i got a real education this am on the differences between a solid and patterned stripe when it involves curved surfaces especially when curves meet flat. in the case of checkerboard if you don't program the computer to compensate for the curve by slightly changing the checkers size you will wind up with waves in the lines. fortunately this shop is very sharp and they spent an hour making patterns of the curves , etc. as az has a real uv problem and the stripe will be exposed to rock dings he will laminate clear bra material over the stripe. looking forward to the install next monday. if i ever figure out how to post pictures ( i'm a real idiot when it comes to computers) i'll post pictures when finished
have you recently looked at the line of the last row near your rear window. i'd say it is going down hill and if continued to the back window to straighten it out it would have to wave up. you just made my point !
Yeah the curve of the checkered mirror caps that MINI makes and the fact they did not compensate for them are why I hate the look and wouldnt buy them for my car. You have to compensate for the curve or it looks off. I also agree there are curve issues with the checkers on the red car pictured.
