R56 Sport button and MPG
Sport button and MPG
I thought I’d share the results of an unscientific test I did with my MINI. Although gas mileage was not the primary issue for buying my car, I was curious what effect driving with the sport button on might have on my in-town gas mileage. I ran two tanks of fuel, back-to-back, bought at the same place. On the first tank, I drove with the sport button on. On the second, it remained off. Both were my typical routine of driving to and from work, running errands, dropping the cat off at the vet, going to lunch and the like—all in-town driving. I tried to maintain the same driving style throughout. Instead of using the on-board computer, I calculated mileage the old fashioned way, miles traveled since last fill-up divided by number of gallons to refill. The result was 22.7 mpg with sport button on, 22.3 with it off. I was surprised. I had expected to get 25 or so with it off. Has anybody else compared mileage with sport button on vs. off?
Perhaps aggressive driving to you is how my 82 year old mother drives her Chrysler 300...
No, not quite . Apparently something wrong with his mini.
My fellow Tallahassean, good to see you on the board. When folks quote their miles per gallon they rarely mention average MPH. I think that needs to be factored into the equation. If I average --say 60 mph w/o hammering I would probably get 35+ MPG. If I average 22 MPH city traffic/red lights--with some hammering I get around 23-24 MPG.
I would hate to tell you what my MPG on my '01 Vette and even my '09 135 stick (around 15MPG). My JCW is by far the best MPG I have had and also the most fun. If MPG are a major concern I suggest a Justa.
Hey Joe, give me a call. Nick

If something's wrong with his Mini, something must be wrong with mine as well.
In addition to my Mini, I also own and drive an NSX, a '95 Supra, as well as an M3. I drive all my cars "aggressively" and only get about 19-20 mpg around town in my Mini.
There's absolutely no way you can drive aggressively around town and get 31 mpg. Not happening.

I got 34-35 with my cooper S. I get 32 with my JCW. I have an app on my iphone and enter the exact gallons used and the mileage. I am positive it is exact. I do know the onboard computer in both cars was always showing 2 -3 miles more than actual. I got every tank written down for a year and a half to prove it.

Guess I must be the only one driving my Mini aggressively around here (like I stole it).
I have no interstates at all to work. My average speed is around 37 on the computer. I go through 4 or 5 towns in my 20 mile drive to work. It is around 55 between towns and 35 in them.

Matches the 28mpg the car is rated for too.
This is tthe best I could do. This is the 2008 MCS.

Here is the JCW. I will have to see if this changes. I always used Turkey Hill gas since it was top tier. Now they are not. I think I will try Exxon.

I just don't believe those figures people are putting up saying that they get 33/34/35 MPG's in a MCS. I've driven a few MCSs over the past few years and have never seen that kind of milage. Even when I drive the cars "as boring as you can possibly drive a car" I still don't see it. And that goes for any of my friends with MCS's, they laugh when I tell them the milage some of you people claim on here.
Have you considered checking your oil level? I've notice on MCS's that are even 300mL over filled with oil they will drop 2-3 mpg, because of the crankshaft slapping the oil in the pan. Just something to consider....

wow something must be wrong with my car. i have a 30 mile commute, all freeway and i only get 31mpg and i drive at 80-85mph. im hoping that itll get better as i put more miles on it, has 1700 miles, maybe not....
Also was told manual get a lot better numbers then auto.
with over 14K I get ~28-30 mpg with Sport mode on. without it on I'm in the ~26-30 range.
I suspect that I compensate for the throttle lag with more pedal.
My daily commute is 14 miles, mostly 40-55 mph and under 5 traffic lights, all flat.
In comparison, I'm debugging my winter vehicle (98 4Runner) and I'm getting 18 at best on the same commute.

The compuyer is always high. Mine always shows like 3mpg more than calculated by hand so you can't go by that figure.

and still get about 28.
