I have been using BMW/MINI oil 5w 30 for most of its life. Has anyone ever used Castrol Edge 0w 30 or 5w 30? I know Castrol is the MINI oem.I was wondering if there was a measureable difference.

 

I have been using Edge for a year now. Before that my MINI was on a moble ! diet. I have not noticed any difference. I usually change the oil every 5 to 7 K, depending on driving conditions. This Mini is driven only in the spring, summer and fall. Most often on MINI drives. It only gets driven daily in the summer months. My opinion of castrol Edge is good, but I'm sure some real gear head would have the oil analyzed to see what it cleaned up in the engine. For me.... I like it better than Mobil One, it must be the marketing. Well done Castrol!

 

If you have a turbocharged car MINI requires an ACEA rating of A3/B3 - I do not believe Castrol Edge has this rating. German Castrol, Genuine MINI Oil and Mobil 1 0W40 has this ACEA rating. Perhaps not a concern if you are out of warranty but within warranty you may want to use an oil that meets MINI's requirements......

 

fwiw, the recommended Castrol blend would be the Castrol Syntec European Formula 0w30.
