Just a guess, but I'm thinking that it's there to show the range of the fuel gauge, so that you can judge at a glance the relative position of the current level. Look at an analog gauge, and you can see the full range and where the needle is within that range. The dot at the high end accomplishes the same thing, since the low end is always lit.

Mine's not lit up in this pic but you can see it right above to the gas pump icon.
Oh, and this is my first MINI but I echo the positives of the above posters. I have two modified, very fast and fine-handling vettes and, although I miss driving them, I miss it less so with this new daily driver.

Patches, thanks for posting the pic of the gauge. It really does seem very strange, but if it is always on and never changes color, then it seems like it is just a marker indicating where the FULL spot is so that in the dark you can see how much gas you have relative to FULL.

God, what a toy!!! Picked mine up last Tuesday and 146 miles later its just burned two gas marks. I also experienced understeer today. It does need suspension tuning. I just hate to hurt the marginally decent ride.

My prior car was an 08 BMW 335i coupe sport pack. The MINI ride is midway between the 335i with and without runflats. Its main problem is its a bit too bouncy. Nothing that Bilstein HDs won't cure.
