R55 automatic trans question

hey everyone!

we have had our MCSCa for 3 weeks now and love it!

I have a question about the functionality of the sport mode on the tranny, is there any way to keep it from coming out of manual mode? I know that if its in D and you do some paddling it will go back to D after a short period of time, but i find it goes back to DS even if i have the sport button on and the shifter in the M gate. Once its in M shouldn't it stay there until you don't want it there anymore? I'll play with it again today, but i swear it won't stay in M.

When you first move the shifter left to the M/S position then you get DS (Sport) mode - fully automatic. Manual mode is not invoked until you actually shift one up or down with the shift lever. Once in manual mode it stays there until you move the shift lever to the right 'D'.

I don't have the paddles so I am guessing a bit here.
It may be that you used just the paddles after moving the shifter to M/S and that maybe would time out and go back to auto if you don't shift with paddles for a period of time?

It should stay in Manual until you take it out. Don't know why yours isn't doing that, have it checked out.

If you put the shifter in M gate:

1. In non-sport mode you will see "DS" on the indicator, pull/push the shifter once the indicator will change to M2 or something with M - this is the full manual mode. If you only push/pull the paddles, the M mode will stay for only 30 seconds - this is manual override mode.

2. In sport-mode you will see "DS" in D gate, and "DS" in M gate if you do not push/pull the shifter for at least one time.

Thanks nick, that's exactly what i figured out last nite... strange that the paddles don't have the same effect on the mode as the M gate does... i don't like that... oh well

You only need to use the shifter once to tell the gearbox you want to engage full manual mode, after that both paddles and shifter work in full manual mode until you run out of fuel . Keep in mind for engine protection the gearbox will up shift @ red line (6500+rpm) or down shift when engine rev is too low (around 1100rpm).

While they both work in full manual mode, there are some differences:
1. Shifter is quicker for single up/down shift (atomic operation)
2. Paddles are slower for single gear change, but you can jump gears by holding the paddles or quickly pull/push the paddles. (E.g. 2 to 4 or 4 to 2)
3. Paddles allow you to change gear/steer with either left/right hand(e.g. change gear deep in the corner, or change gear/turn into a hairpin while pulling handbrake )
4. In manual mode or D mode it will automatically down shift to M2, for M1 you have to manually select it.
5. Any DS mode will automatically down shift to M1 or any gear that keep your rev range @3000+ rpm, but no 6th gear unless you put it in M6.
