R56 Funny Harmless Noise
Your 2 cents would be wrong.
IT IS THE FUEL PUMP.
+1
I looked at the gas cap locking pin while locking and unlocking and that isn't it. It only whirs when you unlock it after a little while sitting idle; if you unlock it (accompanied by a whir), then lock it, then unlock it, on the second unlock, it doesn't whir. Which supports the hypothesis that the fuel pump is the cause.
...in any case, there's way too much effort being put into this.

I have an interesting sound from my new MCS. It's more like crickets or whatever and I notice in some cases it goes away when I let off the gas and becomes more intense when I press on the gas. I kind of like it but I'm curious what it is. It gives the car personality, lol.
Oh, man. You seriously made me crack up laughing... I love you.
Of course, just in that 'that reference was awesome' sort of way.
speaking of noises... I'm hearing what sounds like a knocking or thumping noise coming from rear of my mini when I'm driving... It almost sounds like my bass thumping but even with the radio off I hear it. Its real random when it happens... Does anyone know what it could be?? Its an 09 mini justa cooper
I will not believe it is the fuel pump until I get a Mini mechanic/tech at the dealership to confirm that. I understand that the R56 has a very high pressure pump because of direct injection. But when one opens the door the fuel pump starts????? Doubtful unless......................
I don't have the comfort access system so the fuel pump idea doesn't really answer what's going on in my car. Because of when it happens, I'm guessing that it has something to do with either the locks or the window motor. I don't mind the sound but I do want to make sure that this isn't a problem that should be addressed now before anything major happens.

The noise you are hearing is your intank low pressure fuel pump pressurizing the system. The high pressure pump needs a decent amount of base pressure in order to reach the point where it wont miss on start up.
