Rally lights for CA MINI

This is my first thread post. So, hello!! My MCS is available for pickup tomorrow!! Woohoo!! Ok, here's my question..

I really dislike the BMW driving lamps. 1) They are way too expensive 2) They are too small

I really would like to have 4 lamps.... but how can I go about this? I live in CA and we have to have license plates on the front...

If any of you know of lights that would work with that, and have recommendations that would ROCK!! Thanks!!

Check out this website:

I don't know if VIP is the cheapest, but I like their setup, even though the lights are still a little small (I know there are other setups, but I haven't researched driving lights that much).

Just make sure you get the right setup for your model Cooper. If it's brand new, it's an R55 if it's a Clubman, an R56 if it's a hatchback, or an R57 if it's a convertible.

Plus the "Vendors" link on the left side of the forums has a bunch of websites dedicated to MINIs, I'm sure a few of those companies have driving lights.

If I ever get driving lights, I'm going to have 4 bigger ones on the lower grille, I think that looks best.

Hope this helps, welcome to NAM!

That is exactly what I want, but can't because of the license plate issue. And I don't really want to keep it on the dash... thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

Check out the Out Motoring website for their project car - 4 good-sized lights across the bumper. I did just 2 of the lights either side of a licence plate, using their brackets. (see my Gallery for pictures. Hella 1000 Black Lightning - not the toughest lights around but excellent spread beam.) Alta have a light bar for 4 smaller lights in the lower air intake, but I'm reluctant to block that as it's the main air intake - you might have to move your licence plate up a little too.
Thinking outside the square: you could to the outer two Hellas like mine, then put 2 more above the licence plate, in the style of the rally cars of the 70s and 80s. The upper grille doesn't draw in as much air as the lower one - in fact, it's half closed off on the Cooper anyway!

If you contact Alta directly they will quote you a price for their light bar with a two-light configuration, which allows the front tag to be accommodated in the standard location. This is the configuration I have on my 1st Gen.

I also have transparent covers for the IPF lights so I don't have to take them off every time I want to use the lights.

Hmmm...I think that may not be true. I was always under the impression that "off road lights" need to be covered. These are lights that are mounted above 42". If you have "driving lights" installed, you could claim that these are "auxiliary driving lights" (which they are) and do not need to be covered.

Taken from the CA code:

In California off road lights must be covered while driving on a highway, as defined in section #24411 of the California Vehicle Code. The California Vehicle Code also defines auxiliary driving lights under section #24402 as not needing covers. Each statute carefully describes the requirements for each type of light.

Then again, I don't even have a front plate so I'm asking to be pulled over anyway.

Does anyone know the legality of having rally lights with no covers in VA? That would be a fun upgrade.

You can only have two auxiliary lights in California.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24402.htm

24402. (a) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two auxiliary driving lamps mounted on the front at a height of not less than 16 inches nor more than 42 inches. Driving lamps are lamps designed for supplementing the upper beam from headlamps and may not be lighted with the lower beam.

(b) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two auxiliary passing lamps mounted on the front at a height of not less than 24 inches nor more than 42 inches. Passing lamps are lamps designed for supplementing the lower beam from headlamps and may also be lighted with the upper beam.
Perhaps you could get away with it if two are connected to the low beams and two are connected to the high beams. That would mean they could not all be fired at once.

Personally, I'd be worried about overheating with the grille blocked by four lamps.

As for the license plate, the "No Holes" License Plate Bracket might help, or it might not. You can adjust the height of the plate with this braket:
