Instead of doing the entire scoop, I did just the outline. I already removed the stripes and will try again tomorrow. I agree, the stripes will look better starting thick and fading off to nothing.
Hmm, not sure about the scoop having a yellow interior. Better able to judge when the stripe is reversed.

It might look interesting with a progression in the scoop. Go from black at the front to yellow as it goes further into the scoop. That would be fading in the same direction as the top stripes after they are reversed. Wait until you see the scoop reversed, before trying that.

As far as the progression of the stripes, help me out. All I did was keep making each strip 1/4" wider than the previous. There was a 1/4" space between each stripe.

Should there be more stripes, each one progressively wider (like Robin mentioned...125% of the previous stripe)
I'm not sure whether it should be 125%, 150%, or what, but it should definitely be a mathematical progression. Just before you go solid black, the last stripe should be fairly wide. You might want to do a mock-up in Photoshop, or something similar, before deciding.

Should the spacing be kept at 1.4"?
I assume that was supposed to be "1/4". I think that is what I would do. I don't really like the example in coyle996's link. Too much going on at once.

I like the look "as is." It accentuates the scoop without being in-your-face about it. Especially appropriate as you have gone to the trouble of color-coding some of your trim pieces which is also more subtle. Don't overdo it, please!!!

btw, these are hard won kudos, friend. I am not a fan of MINI stripes myself and, in fact, have a long-standing grudge against MINI over improper placement of MINI bonnet stripes. I will not have them...never. I prefer the subtle contours of the lovely new MINI bonnet any day. That said...my own daughter thinks I'm nuts on this, but I am undeterred. However, I also will never own a MINI with a mail slot in the bonnet...what's up with that?!?!?! Needless to say, I am as alone in my views as I am correct.

Thanks guys, I really do value your opinions. Once I got the stripes on the car, I realized they should have probably gone the other way. Ya'll confirmed that.

Yes Robin, that was suppose to be 1/4"... not 1.4" Guess I was getting tired...

Gokart,

I appreciate your comments and completely understand not overdoing it. Sometimes, a little is too much.

I'm just playing with different ideas. It's vinyl, if I don't like it, off it comes....

Today I'll switch the fade on the stripes and see what it looks like. Other than that, I'll make the whole scoop black. I also am "arching" the stripes to flow with the shape of the scoop.

Then, if it doesn't work.... off it comes.

Turn the stripes around. Now you have a big stripe the scoop, (which by the way should be entirely black) Followed by a small stripe, then goes back to a big stripe. the whole thing just looks weird now.

Conclusion: entire scoop black, spin stripe around, and you'll look just like the Dodge charger
Seriously, you do realize that is a Dodge design from the 70's rite?

YOu know what intimidates me when I look in the rear view mirror?..a big yellow Mustang 500KR coming up behind me. What intimidates me more is a big racing yellow Mustang with those big SHelby stripes going from front to back. When I was considering the MY color for my MCS, that big yellow Shelby Stripe going from front to back would definitely have been on there. After all, anyway you can intimidate your fellow drivers on the track is an advantage for you

Not so, imo. The glass is dark, the lower windshield trim is dark...the stripe proceeds from that...very logical.

Your designing the stripe to the windshield
I think the idea was to accent the scoop not the windshield. If so, then a nice black scoop followed by the thick stripe succeding to a small faded line towards the back of the car would look asthetically correct

True, I do not favor accentuating the scoop any more than it is. First, the OP has a black roof, the stripe is presently making a transition from the yellow parts of the car to the black parts of the car. Logical. Second, the OP has nicely color-coded major features of the bonnet...why would one, in this situation, choose to accentuate the scoop (which at present is also color-coded)? I think what he has done let's you know the scoop is there without over-accentuating it. This seems more in keeping witht the overall look that has been achieved on the car.

Yes, I am making a case, but only for the sake of justifying a particular artistic approach. The OP can do as they wish...the car would be awesome either way.

Bought my Pure Silver, sliver roof MCS without any stripe. Driving it I noticed that cars (especially SUVs) would speed up to cut in front of me. This didn't happen in my Integra GS (hatchback with spoiler). It seemed they were thinking, "OMG, an econobox. I can't get stuck behind that slowpoke."

As soon as I installed a wide black racing stripe the behavior changed. I rarely get cut off, and when I come up behind someone on the freeway, they are much more likely to move over. There are some advantages to looking like a maniac on the road.

Lol, I swear this is the case too. People think, "Oh its a MINI, I can just zip right in front of him. He wont care, what can he really do?"

New and Improved....

Here is the new and improved version...

Excuse the water spots, I hadn't had a chance to wipe it down yet. I can't believe it took me almost all day to do this.

Better???

Frankly, I like the very first version better but this does look cool.

I have to say the same thing. From a distance it looks like one big black stripe to me. I didn't get that with the first go around.

Too much attention to the scoop (nose), but what do any of us know? Like I said in other threads, some of us worry too much about what others think. For every detractor you've had, there's been another that loves what you did at the time. Go with whatever makes you feel fuzzy and warm inside.

I agree with this as well. You know what you like...go for that!! Either way, it'll be unique and look good

So, here's the two versions side-by-side, to help compare. Current revision on the left, of course. As far as my opinion, I like the idea of the increasing/decreasing stripe size overall, and am not picky on which direction they're going. On the new one, I think it's cool how you integrated the curvature of the scoop into the stripe, and it widens out to help hide the wiper fluid nozzles too. It does feel like the yellow area in the scoop is out of place, though--I think it still might look better if the scoop were completely blacked out.

But as others have said, it's all up to you.

Regardless your doing great with this stripe. Personally, I think the natural inclination is to continue the stripe down to the grill and black out the scoop.

I think it looks good both ways, you can't really go wrong. Its more aggressive looking the way it is now (black hood scoop thick to narrow,) and more sporty looking the way it was originally. Win/Win, go with your gut.
