First oil change...

Ok, so I'm doing a first oil change at around 4500 miles. I am getting a wiki (?) oil filter and my mechanic buddy suggested using Kendal 5w30 synthetic blend oil (he uses it in his turbo charged car and says it works great). Any feelings, what will this do compared to a full synthetic, will there be any issues? If so what oil would be the best choice?

Any other tips along the way would be great as well.

Thanks

All you need is right here. 5 quarts Royal Purple 5W-30 Synthetic and a genuine OEM oil filter.

walli*mart has castrol full synthetic oil for like 25 bucks for 5 quarts and i would only use the oem oil filter which is usually around 10 bucks at the dealers. moss mini sells them for like 8 bucks. last time i went to walli*mart they even now carry royal purple for like 8 bucks a quart. since your still under warranty i wouldn't use anything that isn't synthetic.

Use full synthetic as recommended. You can use 0w30, 5w30 and 0w40.

Castrol, Mobil, Redline are the oils I find to be good.

Ok, the filter that I ordered is a Wix, any reason why that isn't ok? The nearest mini dealership is over an hour away, I guess I assumed an oil filter from another company was probably ok.

I read a thread where other oil filter brands have collided inside the housing and have caused damaged. i would stick to oem. if you plan on doing more oil changes i would suggest ordering a few oem from http:////www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewP...96&SortOrder=2 from what i know 5w30 is good for warmer weather and 0w30 for colder weather.

Morristownmini sells the filters for $8 each. It is not on their website but you can e-mail them to get a price.

I would suggest using OEM as well.

OP,
Have some fun and search this site for oil change threads, Royal Purple, and such. You'll find more info than you can imagine. A guy called ScottRiqui, I think, has been doing routine oil analysis and shares his results. If not him, you'll run across it if you do the search. Big topic here.

The following was found on MINIUSA.com's Owner's Lounge regarding approved oils:

Synthetic Engine Oil Information:

MINI High Performance Synthetic Oil is recommended for scheduled engine oil changes: MINI High Performance Synthetic 5W-30 Oil (MINI part number 07 51 0 143 829) We recommend that you check your engine oil level whenever you add fuel to your vehicle. If you need to add oil between oil changes and MINI High Performance Synthetic Oil is unavailable, you may top off the oil level with one of the following approved synthetic oils. (For information on checking your engine oil level refer to your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.)
The oils listed below meet MINI’s Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in MINIs in the US market with gasoline engines.

Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market
- Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
- Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
- Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
- Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30
Only use oils with an API rating of SM or higher. The choice of the right SAE grade is based on the climatic condition in the region in which you normally drive your MINI. To best determine which SAE grade is best suited for your vehicle, contact an authorized MINI dealership.

OEM filter ONLY and Mobil 1 oil. You will never have problems.

Oil services every 3,000 - 4,000 miles and you are golden.

Hey Guys. So I did change my oil a while back and it probably wasn't necessary. The oil was clean after 4500ish miles and probably would have been good to go until the regularly scheduled interval. Whatever, everyone can handle it how they want.

I just ordered the kit from Detroit tuned and am gonna have it done on Friday. I just wanted to do one oil change at or before the 2000 mile mark. Then i will do it when my car asks me or maybe every 6 months.
