Hood temp problems - How I resolved it ...
Just thought I would pass on a little info on my resolution for melting factory scoop and high hood temperatures ....
First change was the addition of the WMW turbo wrap. My main goal was to control the rapid temperature changes in the turbo turbine housing and keep it more constant which not only helps temperature issues but in spooling (you can search google for more info on this). Rather a pain to install, but I feel it is worth the effort. End result, very effective and my goal was reached.
HINT: before re-installing the factory heat shield, cut notches into the front the shield so instead of having bolt holes, you have slots going to the holes. This makes it very easy to put the front bolts back on, then slide the shield over it and then tighten back down. Works like a charm and no headaches trying to get those front bolts back on.
Second change was the addition of the M7 newly redesigned heat shield. This was added to effectively control under the hood temperatures that the factory worthless beer can metal heat shield can not. This proved to be very effective and also looked very OEM. To boot, it only took a couple minutes to the install with no blood left behind. End result, a very cool hood !!
Third change was the addition of the M7 Vortex CF scoop. Since my factory scoop was damaged and honestly a worthless fake scoop, I replaced it with a very functional and slick looking carbon scoop that will only melt if the car catches fire ! The scoop serves two purposes, feed fresh air to my CAI, and provide a curtain of cool air between the hood and engine. End result, also very effective on two fronts, cool air to the CAI and cooler hood.
So with a engine temp of 221F and the exhaust gas temp of 1450F, the hood is only slightly warm (still need to get my own IR temp probe). Leaving the car parked in the sun, the hood gets hotter that way than the engine running.
Anyone doing this setup will be very pleased with their efforts and so will the car !

Love your setup, morbius. I ordered the WMW turbo wrap before I even picked up the car and I've got the CF Vortex on order.

im glad it fixes the problem. if ur goal was to reduce hood temps then great. but to suggest this as a fix for the melting hoodscoops is a bit unreasonable. although it fixes them, its not a route most drivers are going to take mainly because of the cost to fix a factory problem....look forward to seeing actual temp reduction. great info thnx!

It looks really good on yellow I think. Here's a picture that Peter from M7 sent me when I asked about it.
From what I understand the wrap makes the turbo work more effeciently by keeping the heat on the hot side of the turbo. This also cools it down more quickly because the oil continues to circulate through the turbo after you shut down the engine and carries the heat away from the moving/lubricated parts faster. Don't know if it's true, but that's what I've been told by a few people.
I don't think rain will be an issue. By the time it makes its way through though the scoop and over the engine, it should be pretty much vaporized by the time it reaches the intake which should actually make the air cooler and denser. I might be worried if I had a forced air intake, but not just the scoop.

Yes, you are right its not a fix for a factory problem and honestly, there will be none without a redesign or a major recall ..... The factory replaced my scoop (I gave them the old one, they gave me the new one in the box which is now on the shelf). For me and my mini's, its a resolution

Don't know if you can edit your title but I think it should say something like "How I solved hot hood temps" The way you have it led me to believe the factory had a fix. A little misleading. But glad to read how you resolved the problem on your car.

I've been trying to decide which scoop to get. Just thinking about M7 right now, but I welcome any thoughts about others.
Fiberglass Vortex scoop is $229. For an additional $170 you can get it in carbon fibre.
BUT, if you get the FG scoop it will need to be painted. Given where and what it is, this must be a very good (ie. professional) paint job, costing maybe $150 - $200. So, this is starting to look like a wash, CF and FG will cost me about the same in the end. Hummmmmmmmm.......

is the scoop really going to accomplish anything? i noticed on the other side of the hood, directly under the scoop, is a black padding material presumably for heat absorption. i didn't look too closely but looks like its closed up on the back end. are you required to remove this material to install the CF scoop?

as far as temps go, the scoop just withstands heat better cf has a very high melting point....which is why i think if ur going to spend 200 on a wrap and still possibly melt your scoop (long hours under the sun might melt ur scoop too), might as well spend 300/400 on a cf scoop....
that is of course if scoop melting is your concern
if its just hood temps in general, then this guy has a clear solution.

No the black padding does not have to come off. The M7 scoops are a direct replacement with the exception of an additional hold down bolt which the stock one does not have.
Yes it does. As the air moves through the scoop and into the engine bay, it will help move more of the air above the turbo via air currents. You can experiment with this with the existing factory. Remove the stock one, remove the screws on the back side of the scoop that holds on the grill and remove it and reinstall. Now you have a functional scoop with a smaller profile but still able to move air through the engine bay. Just doing that drops the temp slightly which is better than nothing at all.

I do not have pics handy on how its done. But the black padding sits directly under the scoop. In that area, there is 2 layers of sheet metal and the scoop sits between them. If you look and feel further back you seel a slot opening that happens to line up the existing scoop fake vent. If you remove your stock scoop, you will see what I am talking about. The padding happens to sit right above the turbo heat shield ...
