No offence to your inlaws, but if they're so lazy that they can't be bothered to train a dog not to jump all over their car, then they don't deserve a nice car or a dog, Maybe this year for christmas buy them a gift certificate to a positive reinforcement obedience class. Good luck trying to train a cat to do anything aside from be a total primma donna. Damn cats.

True, but by the same token, cats can be trained just like a dog. Same basic methods work with both animals. No luck needed-you just have to take the time to train them. My cats will do just about all the same "tricks" people train a dog to do, and they behave as well (or better) than most of the dogs my friends have-including ones that have been through obedience classes. Most people just look at at dog and say "I'll train them", but won't put out the effort to do the same with a cat-and then blame the cat (and call them stupid) for not behaving. I grew up with cats that didn't get on our cars. We have several stray cats in our neighborhood, and I've taught all of them to not get on my MINI. It's not hard, just takes a little time and patience.

Oh, and the dog was trained well. It was just trying to get a raccoon that was in the carport.

I may try attaching some contac paper sticky side up to a blanket and drape that on my bonnet. The cat would jump up there and get sticky feet, and hopefully hop off and never go up again. Any suggestions are appreciated
There can only be one solution to this.

Eat the cat.

You guys are terrible... LOL!

I agree, use the softpaws. My friend uses them on her cat because she has some antique furniture that she doesn't want scratched up, and declawing is not something she feels comfortable doing. Just make sure you follow the directions properly.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! For now I bought a heat resistant plastic, felt backed table protector and covered it with a double sided tape that is made specifically to keep cats off things. I also bought some stinky cat deterrent spray to put around the perimeter of the car. So far this is working. I also tried this motion detector that has a barking dog. That did not phase the cats. The thing that worries me now is how hot the bonnet gets and I am wondering if it is ok to put the table cloth on over all that heat. I guess people put car covers on hot cars with no problems.

No, no, no, no. You're doing it wrong. Just make kitty stew and spend no money.
