R56 Trade-in 2006 for 2009 MINI?
Trade-in 2006 for 2009 MINI?
So I'm thinking of trading in my 2006 MINI for a 2009 model. When I purchased the 2006 model my budget was tight so I got a very basic model. Funds are still somewhat limited, but I've decided I would really like to have cruise control and I need a 6-speed manual - it drives me crazy on the highway with 5-speed, I constantly feel like I need to shift it up to a higher gear. The offer I received from my dealer is $18k trade-in and $20,450 for the 2009 model, w/tax etc. I would pay $3000 out-of-pocket. Should I go for it? Sounds like a good deal to me, it includes the Premium pkg., that's the only option I've requested. My 2006 is in good to excellent shape and has 15,000 miles on it.
Thanks!
Thanks!
I totally think you should go for it! Sounds like a good deal...
p.s. do you have a loan on your 2006? if not, that's an even sweeter deal!
Just make sure the cruise and the 6-speed are going to be enough for you to switch to the new r56...(weigh your options, etc.) I hate to hear buyer's remorse!

The cruise and 6-speed are really the only things I miss on the MINI I have now. I love my MINI and I even hate the thought of letting it go, so I think I'll be happy just adding those two features. What is the new r56?
The other thing I don't like on my 2006 is the AC, it's pathetic. I'm hoping if I go for the 2009 that it'll have a better AC unit than I currently have in my MINI. Are there other options that you would recommend?

I think options are a personal choice. You may want to price out your purchase a few times on the MINI USA site. You may find that you don't want all of the items in the Premium package and could just price the options that you want in that package. If you are really trying to keep costs down you may want to get a solid color rather than a metallic, that alone will save you $500.
Part of the fun of ordering the car is pricing different cars at MINI USA. Good luck in your decision I think you have a great deal.

Have you driven a newer model with 6-speed. I have a 6-speed and even in 6th I also want to shift up when on the interstate. It seems that these cars just run at a higher rpm than others. The deal you have been offered seems good but I would just make sure that you will be satisfied with the newer model. The deal you have been quoted seems good but it would be sad to spend extra money and still have the same feeling.

The new R56 is the internal code for the 2nd Generation Mini Cooper.
Since you miss not having cruise control like others have mentioned you can just order the multi-function steering wheel (cruise control and radio controls) for IIRC only $250 instead of getting the pricier premium package.
Either way you do it it is still a great deal they are offering you.

oops yea sorry, the r56 is the second generation of MINI (a little bigger, plus a bunch of other differences such as no longer supercharged but turbochargerd etc....to name two of the differences.) You can do a search for the differences between the two models. Thanks JCR, for 'splainin that to the OP
I thought I'd posted a reply to this thread already, but its disappeared.
We did much the same thing, we upgraded from the 04 Cooper to the 07 Cooper just because we wanted the 6 speed. It gives you that extra gear to shift into. At 70mph, new one would be doing 3.5k revs in 5th, which is about the same as an 06 in 5th. If you change up to top in a new one, the revs would go down to 3k. The difference between 5th and 6th isn't a great deal but its noticible when cruising.
After we got the 07, I decided I preferred it over the 04 for a lot more reasons than just the extra gear. I prefer the handling and the fuel economy is quite a bit better as well as numerous other little improvements.
Edit: I see the post I made, its in your other thread about the gearing, this ones the "Should I" thread. I still say go for it.

That's an unbelievable deal! Your car certainly didn't depreciate much over three years. A neighbor of mine just bought a 1 year old Lincoln Town Car that lost 1/2 its value in one year! Other gas guzzlers have probably lost more - who wants them? Go for it and with extreme prejudice.
Well I did it! I ordered my new MINI yesterday. Decided to go with Pepper White w/black top, what I currently own. I wasn't that thrilled with the color when I purchased my 2006, but it's really grown on me so I decided to stick with it. I added the Premium Pkg because I wanted cruise control and a sunroof, I know there's issues with the sunroof, but I'll take my chances because I love having one. The only other option I went for was the Rain Sensor. There were so many other options I would've loved to splurge on, but I had to be good and stick to my budget.
It's expected to come in mid-November - needless to say, that better go fast.
Thanks everyone for your input, it really helped me in my decision - and I think you'll all agree that I made the right one
