I've always named my cars. I've had Mr. Stick Shift, Skippy, Benecio and now Sir Ranulph.

When I was thinking of buying a MINI, I thought of Nigel or Trevor or Winston. I originally wanted an oxygen blue MINI and it definitely would have been named Nigel. When I decided not to wait and order mine, I got nightfire red instead and Nigel seemed too polite for a red car.

Right before I picked up Sir Ranulph, I saw a story about the real Sir Ranulph and he was described as the last great British explorer. That's what I wanted my car to be, too, so it stuck.

You can call him Ran for short.

Documeted Vessels are not required any State Registration, but they do require a Name and Home Port to be displayed.

Some say it is bad luck to change a ships name. When I got my ancient Kings Cruiser Sailboat from an old Swede, he refused to tell me her name, just muttered about "the crazy Norwegian he got her from" ~~ I carved the name Valkyrie on her stern. Few pilots assign names to airplanes as Registration Letter/Number is plainly displayed and this is required to be used as your Radio Call ID, on a Boat, your Vessel's Name is used as your Radio Call ID. I have a GradyWhite Fishing runabout that GW called a "Spirit 175" and when I use the radio, I just use the ID "Motor Vessel Spirit" and have never thought to name her different.

What might be viewed as "silly" to you, is something that has meaning to others. My Mini is the only possession that I have chosen to name. I feel it is one of the more unique possessions I possess and worthy of being different. What's so strange about that?

So don't name your numerous material possessions, but I think it's silly that you don't!
Although the MINI was the ONLY auto that I wanted to replace my un-named, but loved Turbo LeBaron Ragtop, I truly did not expect the MINI to restore a love of driving that had just disappeared over thirty-five years ago (discovered flying), but except for any desire to deal with a clutch again, she has brought me back (forty years) to the days of the MGB.

It has been said that your MINI will name him/herself and this is true, have no clue where the name Trixy came from, but first wash/polish and it just popped into mind and would not leave, but I would never carve it on her transom.

My previous car (82 VW Rabbit S) had a license plate that started with KXM-xxx,
so it became known as Kicks'em.
When I got my MINI in 2003, I got it a BLIKSEM plate, which is afrikaans
(my wife was born in South Africa) for lightning (often used as a swear word there).

The matching vanity plates have paid dividends too. A couple of weeks ago I was motoring along the highway ahead of a minivan. After about 10 minutes, the minivan raced up my left-hand side like it was going to pass, then suddenly slowed and matched my speed alongside. I got a bit nervous for a few moments not knowing their motivation for the radical maneuver, but when I glanced over, there was a woman in the passenger seat, wearing a big smile, holding up an improptu, hand-written sign to the window: GANDALF LIVES!
I love this.....and I have the Silmarillion memorized too........your daughter and I would get along great!

Now I could also take "my car" and modify it to "my MINI."
Then, to be perverse, I could turn that around so it becomes "MINI me"

I had a 1966 VW that was named by my friends after the noise its 6 volt horn made: "Schnork". It was often expanded to "Der Schnorkenwagen".

I googled British male names on the internet and was getting disappointed with the selection (no way was I going to name my car "Harry") until I came across the name "Linus". The only "Linus" I have ever heard of was the little guy in the Peanuts comic strip. The name, like the car, is pretty unique so it seemed perfect.

Maybe if you name your mini it will one day be famous..... Remember the Spirit of St. Louis or the Enola Gay and what about all the famous ships... Nina, Pinta, Santa Marie, Lusitania, Mauritania, etc. Lets not forget the famous cars too....Christine, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, etc....

In response to X uh oh X and who would name their car anyway?...why, Harley owners of course... I named my 05 S Emma (as in Emma Peele from the British tv show "The Avengers"). She was sexy, smart and agile, much like my car. Naming your car is one of the most endearing things you can do for your car next to customizing her or him. So far I have adorned her with a real (old school) Royal Auto Club (RAC) grille badge (no vinyl magnetic stuff here), some requisite union jack flags on the side fenders and out back, some Tail of the Dragon decals from more than several years of visits to that incredible ribbon of asphalt playground. Also a Blue Ridge parkway license plate with the letters XLR8 (accelerate) to underscore the fact that she ain't stock! Now see, isn't that more fun?

The best cars aren't named. They're numbered.

Although I have yet to order my car, I already know the name will be "Groo"! The name is a reference to Groo The Wanderer, someone was using that as a handle on my BBS back in the online days of the Commodore 64 (circa 1986). I never knew where the name came from until I looked up the cartoon. I liked the "Wanderer" part since a Mini driver never needs a reason to go wandering! Plus, Groo was known for causing mass destruction wherever he went, which is a theme I'd like to continue in my PW/B JCW!
