R56 Why did you name your car?
I always name them - cars, motorcycles - if no name comes to mind we know there is a bonding problem going on and something is amiss
When I first started visiting the forum before I ordered a new car, I thought is was funny that many people on the forum had names for their cars. So I thought I would give it a funny name.
On Spike TV there is a dubbed Japanese TV show called MXC. Its a show where teams compete against each other in crazy or dangerous stunts. All of the names of the participants are made up names based on celebrities or "dirty words". For some reason, in every episode there is a contestant with the last name "Babaganoosh". My kids and I always thought that was funny. so the name stuck.
But 99% of the time the whole family just calls it the mini.

My wife named hers "Fiona", just because it seemed to fit.
Mine is named "Dutch", after the "Flying Dutchman", because when it was making its trip from Oxford to the U.S., everyone lost track of it for about a month. MINI couldn't tell me where it was, my MA had no idea, checking its status online said that it was at the dock, then on the boat, then back off the boat on the dock again, then back at the factory, etcetera etcetera.
It's actually convenient having names for them to keep from getting them confused (they're both 2006 'S' convertibles). When I send in used oil samples for analysis, I even use "Fiona" and "Dutch" as the unit numbers on the paperwork, so the results don't get confused.

I named mine after my cat Munchie (Short for Munchkin).
Munchie was found in the trash can of a fast food place off of I-85 outside Durham, very sick and malnourished. The vet thinks he has some elements of dwarfism in him as he is real tiny. I don't think the vet thought he'd make it when we brought him home and to the vet. On his third or fourth vet visit the vet proclaimed him to be the luckiest cat alive. He's a fighter and scrapper.
Anyway it seemed appropriate to name the Mini after the cat. Both tiny and a heart of a lion...

When I took delivery of my MCS, my MA told me, "you do realize that these cars name themselves, right?". My first thought was, "oh God, he's one of those people!"
I will admit that I refer to my truck (95 F-150 extended cab, long bed) as the Battlestar Galactica because, well, it's friggin' HUGE! One fine morning I walked outside to hop into the Mini to go to work and, as I looked lovingly over at him, it hit me like a ton of bricks! I blurted out, "Good morning, Tug." He was parked behind the Battlestar Galactica and looked like a shiny new tugboat behind a well-used barge.
My MA was right, he named himself.

We named them because that's what people in the cult (the owner's lounge) seemed to do, once we got the first one it seemed quite sensible. However, the first one never did got named, because someone could never decide on the right name.
Ever since then I've been more proactive about naming, I get an idea and unless someone comes up with a better idea, that's the name. (And she hasn't yet.)

I never intended to name my MINI. But, one day about a year after I brought her home, we did a particularly fast swerve and dodge in traffic at high speed to avoid an incident happening ahead of me. After we got clear I reached up, patted the dash and out of my mouth came "Nice job Isabelle."
She's been Isabelle ever since.
I guess I agreed with Warped's MA - they name themselves.

Well, for someone who owns a Miata, a Grand Prix and a Lotus, maybe a MINI is just another material possession, but for a lot of us, a MINI is something we've desired for a long time. Me, well, I'm going on eight years, but my day in the sun is coming next month when I order Stella. My wife picked Stella because my MINI needed a name that was graceful, but at the same time, had an attitude when it needed it. It's also Marlon Brando's wife's name in A Streetcar Named Desire, so that seemed fitting.
Nah, vehicles are akin to sea vessels and names are entirely appropriate in my book. Unlike a bar of soap they have specific characteristics and interact with you very closely (although a bar of soap does get pretty close :D); they create an environment and experience all their own.

When I brought mine home, my soon to be ex wife gave me a hard time because I got a "miniature car" instead of a regular size car or an SUV
. The very next day I went to the DMV, reserved my vanity plate (MNIATUR) and ordered an euro plate on Ebay with "MINIATURA" in it, just to mess with her... The rest is history...
