R56 is on a boat heading to the States; how should I sell my old car?

Hi everyone! Thanks for checking out my post.

As the subject line reads, how should I sell my RSX ('05 Type S incase you're interested )? I'm to the point to where I've decided to sell the car privately and I wanted to find out what everyone's thoughts are for where I should advertise. All of this is in addition to slapping a For Sale sign on the car. So far, Cars.com and AutoTrader.com are the places I have in mind and AutoTrader is beating out Cars (I'd like to advertise it on one site). Since this is my first time to sell my car privately, I'm interested in getting some pointers. Any thoughts?????????

Thanks for your help!

I sold my car on ebay a couple weeks ago in preparation of my MINI. I had a great experience and received above Kelly Bluebook. I've heard good things about good ol'Autotrader as well.

Craigslist all the way . I sold 2 cars, each within 2 months or so. And paying nothing to boost . Good Luck! Austin looks cool .

Ebay, craigslist, and maybe autotrader. I got more hits on Ebay and craigslist when I was selling mine.

AutoTrader

I listed my car on AutoTrader, Cars.com and my local newspaper's website - 95% of the phone calls I got were from the AutoTrader listing. I didn't try Ebay or Craig's list, but I sold my car in about a week for the price I wanted ($2600 more than the Mini dealership offered).

I'll be doing the same. Planning on going through CL and AT if I can't find anyone I know to buy it.

CL and AT are good. Or if you don't want the hassle, you can always sell it to a local CarMax dealer. They usually give you a little more than blue book and way more than dealers.

A friend of mine recently sold his old car by parking it near a local high school with its "For Sale" sign in the window (this was in June, near graduation). Wound up selling it to a student who'd be using it to go to college in the fall. (He didn't have any luck with CL).

I tried Craigslist locally but that didn't yield ANY responses. I think that far too many people are "selling" cars on CL right now.

I did list it on cars.com and I sold it in 24 hours. Recommended. I have not tried autotrader.

I had an amazing experience with Craigslist. I sold my SUV for full asking price (above Blue Book) within 48 hours of listing. I was expecting a long drawn out sale process because it was an SUV, but I ended up sharing my husband's car with him for a month while waiting for my MINI!

You can only post 4 photos on the Craigslist site, but when you get (local only!) responses, you can share more photos via email. No fees or commission either.

I've had great luck with Craigslist too, sold every car I've listed.

Reminds me I need to get outside today (fog not withstanding) and clean up my old car and shoot pics of it so I can get it advertised (and sold!). Lucky for me it just needs a quick bath & vacuuming of the interior.

I'm in central NJ, I got a ton of responses from Craigslist. Make sure you post some good pictures.

Sadly, there are a lot of Passats of the same vintage on my local craigslist. I don't expect this to be easy.

Put up my CL ad earlier today, working on AT tonight.

My CL ad can be seen here, I'd appreciate any suggestions people might have: http://nh.craigslist.org/cto/783826993.html

Ya know I'm old fashioned but I've had the best luck with local classifieds it's worked for me twice the key to selling any car is to do your research and price it correctly. In my experiance your car is never quite worth what you want to get for it. Also don't list the car for the least you will take for it always leave some negotiating room for the buyer to feel good.

Yeah, there's something to be said about a free posting. I'll give CL's a shot. Thanks for the recommendation.

Sound's like AutoTrader is the way to go. Thanks for the info!

I agree, checking out the market and pricing the car a little higher in expectation of the buyer to haggle is the way to go. I got a laugh while checking what other sellers I'm up against. One dealer wants what the car sold for new even though it's 3 years old and has 25K miles. I guess they're just fishing for that one idiot...

just an FYI... you may get some spam when selling your car online. I had people calling from Russia and India and Africa. You may also get some pretty good spam emails. Your car may get purchased to be exported. The last 2 cars I sold online ended up down at Newark, NJ on containers to get shipped off (Mitsu and VW). I had the most success with cars.com.
