I got the rear fog lights because I drive to the Fresno area at least 4 times a year and its a necessity there. Saying that, I do like the looks a little better with the rear fog lights but most people would never notice the difference inside or out.

Molly is NOT just Great she's FANTASTIC!! I didn't see the need to have the Rear Fog Light and I'm NOT sorry I did NOT order it. It was going to be a Red Light against the O2 Blue and White Tail Light scheme I was going for. As OCD as I am...I DON'T even notice the missing Toggle.

Yes, that is probably true, if you stay in Saugus. Other parts of California can have some rather nasty fogs. Hwy 5, roughly between Modesto and Sacramento is notorious for pockets of tuly fog that cause multi-car pile-ups with fatalities. Traffic often runs at 85 mph there in clear sunlight. Suddenly there is a patch of very dense fog. Some cars slow down, others don't. With the high rate of speed and the limited visiblity, these cars tend to try to occupy the same space-time and people die. I believe PCH south of Los Angeles has similar problems. Rear fog lights, if turned on in time, could help you be seen a little sooner -- allowing the driver of the 18 wheeler behind you to know a few moments earlier that he is going to crush you. This will give him a little more time to record the event in his mind for future nightmares.

Rear fogs are also useful for further infuriating the road rage psycho tailgating you for going the speed limit. It lets them know that you see them and aren't going to get out of their way. Seriously though, the rear fogs have helped me get a few cel phone distracted drivers to back off when they weren't really conscious that they were tailgating. I only use it when there is no way to get out of their way.

I must say that this thread does seem a bit defensive. Rear fogs usually comes up when someone asks what they should consider when configuring an order, or what people regret not getting. I don't recall anyone claiming that MINIs without rear fogs are worthless trash. Or, putting people down who did order them.

Rear fogs are pretty useless for someone interested primarily in racing. For the daily driver, ordering them is cheaper than regretting having not ordered them.

Road rage shootings have mostly gone out of style in California. It was popular for awhile, but is now passe. However, there are neighborhoods where just driving in there can get you shot.

Look. If the factory didn't fill in the bank of toggle switches, I would have had to fill it in myself with a toothpick and gum.

I think obsessive-compulsive is the norm, and the rest of you have some sort of "disorder."

I second the "annoying tailgaters" comment. I drove an Audi A4 as a dealer loaner for a few days a couple years ago, and got no end of enjoyment out of flipping on the rear fogs when somebody got too close. On Audis they are indistinguishable from brake lights, so the tailgater panics and backs off, then slooooowly creeps closer again.

Rinse, repeat, until the punk behind you rockets around you and gets busted for speeding.

Used to bother me

My MCS doesn't have the rear fogs either. At first, I was feeling left out as I ordered the rear fogs on my '04 MC and enjoyed having them in the lake effect snow storms we get here in Cleveland. Now though, I don't miss them very much. The only part about missing them that bums me out is the STUPID plastic punch-out blanks that remain in the rear grill area. I just don't understand who at MINI/BMW would think that would look acceptable. STUPID! I've even gotten over not having a full toggle panel any more. I was going to order the red fog light covers from OutMotoring, but after thinking about it, why have the lens if you can't light them up. STUPID! (can you tell I like that word) Anyway, non-rear fog lighters unite!

Wow thats pretty dangerous if thats what your using them for, I mean are you in the left lane when this happens, if so and your not in the act of passing a vehicle your are breaking the law and causing more of a traffic condition than anyone speeding. Not to mention fake braking just to **** someone off seams rather reckless, it may make you feel better, but your causing more potential for an accident than the jacka$$ thats tailgating/speeding.

Personally, I never found an occasion to use rear fogs (had them in my last two cars), and on most boards you get made fun of if you drive around with them on (unless your in fog that is). To me I associate them with the bozos that drive around with way to bright aftermarket HIDs, using light to irritate people is just obnoxious.

I have been thinking about adding a toggle with a cool label/icon there just for fun. Bought the toggle from Pelican Parts... it was only $7. Now just need to figure how to trim it down so it will fit without having to remove the head unit. Any suggestions?
I'm surprised no one has come up with an aftermarket stick-on rocker switch, and maybe some decals for the "blank" switch. I think a decal with an icon of a seat going through the roof would be cool, or maybe a label that just says "faster".

My comment was supposed to be a bit of sarcastic humor. The point was that one could get themselves into trouble when using the rear fogs against angry drivers. We need a sarcasm emoticon.

That's not me at all. I'm usually the one getting frustrated by the left lane hogging idiot in front of me. So, I am careful not to be guilty of that myself. I tend to keep an eye on my rear view mirror. I like to always be aware of what cars are around me and what they are doing. It is also useful to know when CHP are coming up behind.

If someone is coming up fast behind me, I'm usually out of the way before they have to slow down.

Sometimes there is nowhere to go. There are a lot of 55 mph country roads in my area with only one lane each way. The times I've used the rear fogs for tailgaters is when there is a car ahead of me and the driver behind me doesn't seem to be aware that they are too close. I don't really think they confuse the lights for brake lights. When I did it to a woman with a cel phone, she just looked surpised and a little confused, then backed off.

I've used them in fog several times. I also find it annoying when people run their front fogs when there isn't any fog. I assume the rears would be just as annoying. They are probably very bright. So, I only use them for cause.

When I configured my MINI online I started with the rear fog lights and built the car around them! Seriously, after I take posession (a couple of weeks), and I drive into my first patch of fog, will I remember to turn them on? We'll see....

Now, why on earth hasn't someone come up with either one of those? Great suggestions - seriously! I want the ejector seat switch.

How do you all feel about front fog lights?

I didn't order rear fogs, and I'm fine with that. I just wish I wouldn't have a blank spot in my toggle switches. :(

Has anybody found a vendor that makes a "fake" toggle that's easy to install? or at least a decal to put over it? I've heard the toggle panel is NOT easy to remove, so even if i just get a decal to put over the blank, that'd be cool....

Confessions of a rear-fog-light-haver...

I have them...er...it. My wife followed me home from the dealer when I picked my new MC. I left it on for the trip home and when we got there, she said "That little red light in the middle is really annoying." I don't like to be annoying and I've never switched it on since. It's a waste of money in my opinion. I'm just saying...
