Clunking noise from rear after shutting off car

I did a search but couldn't find this problem. I have noticed now after almost a month that right after I turn off the car I hear a 'thumping' of 'clunking' noise coming from the rear of the car for several seconds. Thoughts? Anyone else have this?

i don't have my MINI yet, but my dads BMW Z4 does the same kind of thing. When you turn the engine off it goes clunk clunk clunk. Dealer says it's normal.

This question does come up now and again- the general consensus is that is has to do with the fuel tank bleeding off pressure.

Hi Rudecat! Any update on the thumping noise? I have it as well, of course the service folks don't hear it. I hear it at idle and when I turn the motor off.

It may be the exhaust system expanding or contracting. Although I don't notice it here in Florida, when I lived in Maryland and because it was cooler the cooling of the exhaust system made clunking noises. Remember, heat expands metals and cold contracts them. Stuff happens and you get the noise I think you're hearing. Please don't take this as gospel, just my informed guess.
