Can't we all just be friends who enjoy our Mini's? Each to his own choice - we are all unique just like everyone else

There is no right or wrong answer to the OP's question: "Would you get the Cooper S, were you to do it again?"

The key word there is you.

I agree with that entirely. That's why I said do what makes YOU happy. There's no reason to talk down about Coopers, saying they're "not spirited." A MINI is a Mini is a MINI. They're all spirited.

Contrary to muladesigns1, I could regret getting an R53 MCS, much too thirsty. I'm not worried about the cost issues, its my environmental conscience which gets me. I had to justify gas guzzling vs fun. With the R56, I seem to be able to drive an MCS more efficiently than an MC. That's not to say I do drive it more efficiently, I think I'll get better economy from the MC under normal circumstances.

I meant more from a driving standpoint, not an enviroment one.

as far as thirst? i have a ton of mods and still get high mid to upper 20's
which is just fine for me. ive been driving street rods and customs the past 20+ years at only 10-18 mpg
so i couldn't be happier.
the enviroment impact of my car? well, I think that if we looked into big factory's and stuff like that, we wouldn't have to worry so much about cars like we do.

But if you believe that a Cooper cannot hang with an S for some spirited driving on the twisties, meet me at the Dragon this fall and we'll see.

The bottom line is this...buy and drive what makes YOU happy.

actually, If you drive an "S" and a "jutacooper" on the autox, you will notice that (drivers being equal) the S will pull out of turns quicker because of the extra boost, also will make up time agian during the race in the straights.
the S is also built from the factory with a stiffer suspension, so again, it will handle a little better.

OH and at BTWYX, a faster car is built more for a "lazy" driver! better tell all those rallye racers to trade in there S's, and WRX's and by a slower "justacooper" or base impreza. The S, and WRX is making them "lazy"

+1. Not getting on a "high horse" here, I'm sure the non-S Coopers are still a lot of fun. And if you're happy with it, that's okay too... nobody's trying to talk anyone out of a car they enjoy. I'm sure a professional driver could make many an S driver look silly on a track. But with the same driver on the same course, the S is faster. Quarter-mile, road-course, circle-track, auto-x, whatever. I'm sorry... that's not a matter of opinion, it's a fact.

Additionally, challenging people to contests on the Dragon is about as idiotic as it gets. Keep it on the track.

MINIBee, I have been touting your driving skills since I was trying to keep up with you on the Dragon in May. Both of them are definitely spirited and fun for similar and different reason, and most of the fun comes right down to driver skill. Also, are u definitely goin in October? Cause I'm seriously pondering it.

Am I the only one sick of this thread?

Seems like nothing but a bash fest. Get over it. An MC is an MC and an MCS is an MCS. Of course there are differences and each person decided prior to purchase which options best suited their particular needs.

I needed maximum gas mileage and reliability and a fun car and I don't need to race off the line etc...but others may enjoy that. Just buy whatever fits your needs....

/end rant.

I would disagree with that, there's a lot of S-snobbery around here, its turning me off these forums. The S-snobs tend to pour scorn on the Coopers.

I would never dispute that an S is faster, its not the question I'm addressing. I'm talking about which is more fun. I took Tristan out again this morning, instead of Shawn, it was a total blast again. I'm wavering back on which is more fun to drive, I'm coming to the conclusion that the one which is most fun to drive is the one I just got out of, whichever one that is. They're just different.

The more fun one is judged by what is the most enjoyable aspect of the car for an individual.
For me, I love the sound and feel of the supercharger whine. also the stiffer then stock suspension which allows me to take a 90 degree turn at 50+ mph!
the S also allows you to come out of a turn faster because of the extra boost available.
now, if your a "put put" type of driver, then the non S will be more then satisfactory for your needs.

One not need be a "put put" driver to enjoy the cooper. I'm actually a zippy driver. I just happen to enjoy getting the best out of the cooper and find it a total hoot to drive! Really don't get why a good number of the S folks insist that a MINI without a turbo isn't fun. Having a different point of view is one thing... insisting there is only one right answer for everyone is another.

Perhaps Btwyx is right about the S vs Non-S thing... or the manual vs auto thing for that matter...taking some of the fun out of being part of NAM.

Do we need a separate forum for you S guys so can revel in your perceived superiority?

(Ok... that last bit I was just joking... mostly... )

I've sure seen some of that, but in fairness, I've also seen a little bit of defensiveness from the non-Sers. In particular, the OP starts out by being contentious, asking if the "novelty" of the S has worn off for those who chose it. Of course that's going to provoke a little reaction.

Whatevs though... I like all cars. Low riders, JDM rockets, Kustom sleds, American muscle, European exotics, Brit sportsters. Cars are like pizza and chocolate; too many great varieties for me to settle on just one.

QFMFT. BTW the stupidity goes both ways. I hope no one is claiming otherwise

No contest. Just said a Cooper can hang with an S there fine because the MINIs were made for that kind of driving. You'll notice that none of my comments are directed at putting down another person's ride (not spirited, economy car, etc.). If you drive a Ford Pinto and love it, I'm happy for you. Why can't that be the sentiment expressed by all here?

Thanks man. I love my Cooper and I'm just defending it's honor as a capable and spirited part of the motoring community. And yes, I already have my reservations and I will be there. I think a pretty big group is coming from Florida this time. Hope to see you there!

I think a lot of the arguements stem from comments of the "justacooper" owners who say they "drive hard" and that you dont need an S to enjoy the car!
well if you "really" drive hard, I'm talking taking the car fairly close to its limits on a somewhat regular basis. You would obviously not be happy with the non S power output.
then you have a huge amount of S owners modding the car because it still dosent have enogh power for there liking, and then you have some non S owners say stupid things like, "oh there just compensating" a regular cooper is just as zippy.
And we all know that it is not true. I bet if the non S owners would stop saying the cars are similar in performance, There would be a lot less re hash.
