Thinking about MINI

Hi,
This is my first post here. I am currently in a 2003 SRT-4. I love the SRT but I am at 100,000 and ready for something new. I get 30mpg like clockwork out of my SRT (which would probably amaze most SRT owners).
My SRT stock dyno was 225 hp 255 tq at the front wheels, then I added a stage 1 computer and fuel injectors and still got 30mpg (I stay out of boost).

I am trying to decide between MC and MCS. What is the compression ratio of the MC and MCS. Is the compression of the MCS (without boost) lower than standard MC? I drive about 95% highway ( constant 60m.p.h.) so I am looking for some high mpgs. I would like around 38-40mpg. Does the MCS have a boost gauge?

Thanks for the help

some answers. in my MCS manual i got nearly 36mpg over 380miles with 95% freeway AC on and the engine has less than 1000miles. average speed was 12+ the posted speed limit which was mostly 70mph.

so i would imagine 38mpg would be possible with the MCS. Some people with MC are getting close to or over 40mpg CITY so the MC should be fine as far as your MPG requires go.

Boost gauge, no MCS does not have one.

This in itself may mean that you'll enjoy/be accustomed to the extra hp offered by an MCS. Both MC and MCS get good fuel economy, especially if driven sanely. You'll have to choose though.....do you want a car w/ that extra power and slightly less (but still very good) mpg, or do you want a car that has ample power (you might have to row the gears a bit to optimize) but very high mpg. As mellowmcs mentioned, Cooper easily can be 38 mpg city/44 mpg highway (or better) cars if driven sanely.

To bad about the Boost gauge. It comes in real handy when driving for fuel efficiency on Turbocharged car.
I have an innate ability to massage every last mpg out of a car. I even do mental calculations on miles coasted per tank, mainly off ramps and up to stop signs. Yes I am a little crazy.

I probably will do a SCCA solo autocross or two as I have done with me SRT also.

I am between a few cars for a new car. I drive 50miles per day for commute.

MCS/MC (spunky with good mileage)
Jetta TDi sportwagen (great mileage)
Prius (no soul/pleasure but great mileage)

The prius isn't going to do much good driving on the highway, so you might as well take a MC over that. Sounds like you pay attention to driving efficiently in the first place which further makes the prius less useful for you.

Cant beat diesel as far as highway gas mileage goes (probably better than the prius just more expensive fuel)

If you want to replace your SRT closely, gain efficiency, and still have enough grunt for fun the MCS is a good bet. Main downside is that 0.39 Cd really kills you on the highway if you like to cruise fast. Keep in under 70 and don't hit too much headwind and you could get the 38 out of it on the highway. And of course the bone stock MCS is great in autocross GS just as your SRT was in DS.

The MINI has instant mpg read out, if you looking for maximum economy as well as average MPG.

Looks like another srt is going to bite the dust to the mini, this is the 3rd that I have seen cross over in a couple weeks.

MPG is ruling the car world now. Since I also have an srt I had to go with the extra power of the mcs, the mc is way to slow for me plus you can get some good power out of the mcs with basic modding from alta.

The cost of buying a new car will be never recouped from saving money on gas.

it potentially could, hypothetically of course. The new prius boasts 94mpg and at the current 24k, if you drive your *** off you could potentially recoupe it. Assuming you were relating the additional gas saved in comparison to your previous car. IE my car gets 15mpg and that would be almost an 80mpg bump for me

Of course if you had a Ferrari that got 15 mpg.... sell it and get a prius. you pocket a chunk of cash and save money on gas. But it doesn't add up to trade a perfectly good running car that gets 22 mpg (for example) for a 36 mpg car which will create car payment.

I was actually just suggesting that you could pay for the new purcase of the car with the gas savings, right now I spent about 1100 a month on gas at 14.6 mpg average, if I were to get a mini and go to 36 mpg that more than doubles my mileage which cuts that 1100 in more than half lets say now im spending 500 a month in gas for the mini. My payment with insurance will be 510 a month on the mini. and thats a 600 dollar savings in gas every month over my previous car.

That looks to me like the car is paying for itself, but only in my situation. If you go from a 30mpg neon to a 36mpg mini you wont have the same savings obviously. But I was just arguing your blanket statement of the cost of buying a new car will never be recouped by saving on gas. For me it will the savings in gas will actually pay for my car every month.

$6480 a year for insurance? I know people with Ferraris whose insurance is half that!

yep, in 24 yrs old with a 50k dollar car with 425 hp and a shitty driving record, I would be on my parents insurance but they havent spoken to me in 7 plus years so I doubt they would want to help me out hahaha.

My insurance is a mess, o well my fault for getting all them tickets right.

my insurance is almost the same as the payment on my car.

For a person driving 4000 miles/mo with a insurance payment of $500/mo, hell ya. Get any car that gets better gas mpg and you will save money. >60% of passenger cars made in 2008 get better than 15mpg.
