I am not sure which amuses me more. My orginal title of the thread [which i thought was pretty funny] or the response it invoked.

By the way, I showed the thread to my wife and she "bonked" me on the head with an empty plastic Diet Coke bottle and called me a moron. I still love her and we have compromised and will be going to White Castle for sliders and onion chips so that way neither one of us wins. Who said there was a gas crisis?

I'm sorry if it offended anyone. It was never the intent.

Actually I think I've seen you oot and aboot. You'd better wave, since I'll know that you certainly don't have your hand on the gearshift.

Now that sounds like a plan!

I believe issue is much less THAT there was moderation and much more HOW it was handled. No where does the original post show that it is a moderators adaptation and not the original text.

Ummmmmm, ever thought it wasn't meant to be an "attention-getter"? Maybe just a joke that 'someone' took to a level 10, red-light flashing, horn blowing concern?

Seriously, whoever complained needs to quilt something and keep busy elsewhere.

Well...there maybe some sensitive females on this forum who might take offense to the title...especially if they were the ones experiencing some type of spousal abuse.

I didn't take offense personally to the original title...but I don't get offended by much However, I could see why a female may take the title the wrong way. And I'm pretty sure the thread starter didn't want that kind of attention.

Well THAT's sexist!

Who says guys can't get offended as well?

Zero tolerance will be the death of us... Or is that offensive too?

Anyway, we're just talking about stuff on the margin, at best. Do what you want, have fun, and the deltas are so small that it would be nearly impossible for one person with one car to quantify the risk difference or the battery delta.

Have at it!

Matt

ps, if you buy the sliders tonight, do you get to coast going to lights? If she buys the sliders, do you have to keep it in gear? WE WANT TO KNOW!!!!!

I'm one of the people offended by the original title of this thread. And I don't quilt...

While it may be funny to you, it's not funny to me nor anyone else that has been a victim of domestic violence or has seen the ugly side effects of domestic violence. I'm not a victim, I just volunteer my time working with the children of victims. I've seen firsthand that joking about hitting, slapping, etc...is desensitizing many to the seriousness of abuse. Call it PC, call it whatever you want, but I'll hold back my humor if all I can joke about is abuse.

I enjoy comedy, in fact it's a large part of my career. I don't enjoy "jokes" about hitting women.

Headed back to lurker land,

Johnna

Give me a break.......just another example of the few determining what is acceptable to the many.

If you found it so offensive did you read the thread? If not what gives you the right to ask that it be changed? And if you didn't, then why be concerned about it at all.........

Now when I start my car the radio/cd player starts right up. If the battery is running low the radio will stop as I start the engine but will come on as soon as I bring the key back to the run position. An easy way to determine if the battery is going bad.

Now then...

if I remember correctly, the thread title was "things that make me WANT to slap my wife or girlfriend or whatever....." Not things that make me SLAP my wife or girfriend or whatever.

I've been married happily for many a year, and there are some things that my wife does that make me WANT to slap her, yet I don't. There are also things I do that creates the same feelings in her. She doesn't slap or hit, but sometimes flicks my ear. I guess my impulse control is just better than hers. But lets be real, is it now impossible to discuss things that create real, yet unacted upon, impulses? I know, lets all search nam and find references to "shooting people who do things" like in the thread where someones GP was stolen and burned, afterall gun violence is no laughing matter... or the references to shooting a wandering cat that was kneeding on some guys convertable top, that's animal abuse. These are all horrible things for sure, but we aren't censoring them. where's the standards? To me, not allowing discussion on impulse not acted upon is the wrong line to draw. But I guess that's just me...

And the battery will be just fine. Most high load items are disabled during starting the car, and the starting time is short so even if the current draw is higher, its for a short time and the total CHARGE difference or POWER difference is small.

Because coasting in vacuum shuts OFF the injectors, where as idling only dials them down. If you watch air fuels, on deceleration in gear they'll be 20+, spiking to o2 (meaning really lean!). At idle you'll maintain Stoichiometric (14.6).

OK Captain....

go and test it. I have and I've found that for the hills I live in, the gas needed to make up for the fact that the car slows more under engine braking is enough more over no-load idle that it actually saves more gas to run coasting while at idle than to not. Now for really long downhills where you can coast for long times, I can see that not being true (like leaving the Rockies).... But you need a lot more hill to maintain speed with the engine in gear than coasting, when you're only overcoming rolling resistance.

Very educational thread. Seems the definitive conclusion for coasting in neutral is that it doesn't hurt the engine. I do have to say that coasting in neutral on icy roads is a big no no, you could spin out your car in a blink of an eye.

Regarding the original title of the thread, I'll bet if it was "I want to kick my husband's sack", then it would be funny, and no one would be offended.

As the original poster of this thread, all I can say is that the thread name has been changed and I support it. Johnna, and anyone else, if I offended, I'm sorry and I hope you accept my apologies.

With that being said, I tried all three shift methods going home and driving to work. My route takes me on the highway, urban streets and semi-rural roads all with varying topologies. Since here is no harm to the engine/transmission with my original driving method, that is what I will continue to do. Yes, I know there are percceived safety issues. Yes I know i may wear out brake pads sooner. Yes I know the car is technically "out of control". These issues pale in the light of someone eating, drinking, phoning or what have you as they drive a long, none of which I do. I also will continue to leave whatever accessories on and set to my desired settings so I can start the car and go.

I'm done and have unsubscribed to this thread and won't read anynore posts to it so Happy Motoring.

I am sorry the title was changed. I am sorry we have to change our humour for the few whiners complaining about nonsense. If you were abused, my apologies but there are avenues to take to remedy that. Taking your baggage with you here is not wanted. As mentioned, the title was "want to", not "made me" and 99% of males wouldn't physically abuse their significant other. For those of you who try and correlate abuse with humour on a MINI web site, how about redirecting your authoritarian attitudes and stop the sales of Grand Theft Auto. Your overly sensitive and overbearing nature is blindsiding innocent, unrelated experiences on a MINI web site. Please visit appropriate spousal abuse sites if you wish to discuss your personal matters further.

Btw, Johnna, my mom and I WERE victims of physical and verbal abuse by my dad, so bad (in fact) that we left and moved out, she eventually legally separated ... somehow, I am able to discern harmless humour on a web site from unspeakable family living. Maybe you need some therapy to better put things in perspective. And not affect my enjoyment of this and other web sites.

And if she hasn't...does it make it any more right of you to call her out on a public forum??? Do you think that helps her in some way???

I think we are wayyyyy offf topic now...and we've beaten the dead horse of this topic by now...so we all should just move on.

From my original reply in post #29..........

And please, the only thing you should ever slap your wife with is a big wet kiss!

'Auto Pilot', she called herself out. I am only advising that she seek help, if needed, to better deal with the issue.

Maybe you need to re-read and better understand ... and stop dragging this on.
