New MC just ordered....any suggestions for the break in period?
Hi all,
Like the topic says I just ordered a new MC (Sparkling Silver Auto, Performance/Sport/Cold Weather Packages) and wanted to get a little feedback from you guys regarding the break in period.....
For example should I start putting in 93 gasoline or above on the gas and take it easy on the engine for the first 5,000 miles?
My father has a 1st generation MC and puts in 87 gas and hasn't experienced any issues...in fact the service adviser suggested that he not put in 93 b/c of cold start issues.....
So any advice you can give a newb to ensure the prolonged maintenance and highest gas mileage etc would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

i have a MC. I used 93 octane from day one, although if the major brands (shell conoco, chevron, all top tier) had 91 I'd use it, but they don't here. I have heard of some advantage in using lower octane, but only in cold climates in the winter.
As far as break in, I followed directions and limited reving. Drove it easy, altering rpm and avoided constant speeds for 1200 miles. I had to drive 80 miles from the dealer on an interstate when I brought it home and got off about every 15 minutes, stopped and got on again to break it up. Go easy on the brakes for the first 500 miles as well. Then have an oil change at 1200 miles.
That's about it. Some will say drive it like you stole it from day one. I don't buy into that.

All MINIs old and new since 2002 should be running premium gas whatever the octane (91 to 93). Running 87 doesn't make sense if one wants to keep their MINI and the difference in cost is small since the MC gets decently good mpg. You get lower mpg with 87 most likely.

For oil change-

Lots of opinions. No harm to change oil and filter at 2000-5000 miles in addition to the normal MINI intervals. Costly to do at the dealership. Do it yourself or buy the synthetic oil and filter/ O ring and have a garage do it for $19 labor.
My break in-

1000 miles, followed the rules. Got up to 4500-5000 rpm
Easy on the brakes, tires, clutch first 500 miles.
